Director of Camp KIPP DC Job Description
Title: Camp KIPP DC Director (Seasonal, Full-Time)
Reports to: Managing Director of Camps, Change Summer
Total Compensation Package: $45,000 . Compensation based on agreed-upon employment dates.
Approximate Start Date: April 1 (Subject to change)
Approximate End Date: End of August (Subject to Change)
Location:
- Pre/Post Program Dates: Remote. Must be available to travel as needed.
- During Program Dates in June/July: In-Person Onsite in Washington, DC Area
Organization Description
Change Summer provides students from under-resourced communities with a summer experience that increases their confidence, independence, responsibility, and curiosity. We partner with high-functioning school organizations to create high-quality, customized summer opportunities that align with and complement academic year learning for elementary and middle school students. Overview of the Role
The Camp KIPP DC Director will oversee the planning, execution, and daily operations of a Change Summer day camp program in the Washington, DC Area, ensuring a safe, engaging, and enriching experience for campers. This role is responsible for team management, program implementation, and overall camp leadership across school campuses. The Day Camp Director will work closely with Change Summer’s leadership team to ensure alignment with organizational goals and camper success.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The Camp KIPP DC Director is responsible for leading all aspects of the camp’s operations, ensuring an
outstanding summer experience for campers and team. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Program Leadership & Camp Operations:
- Oversee the planning and execution of all camp activities, ensuring they are developmentally appropriate, engaging, and aligned with Change Summer’s mission.
- Establish and maintain a safe, inclusive, and fun environment for all campers and team.
- Manage day-to-day camp operations, including scheduling, logistics, and risk management.
- Develop and oversee camp policies and procedures to ensure compliance with local, state, and national regulations.
Team Management & Development:
- Recruit, hire, train, and supervise a diverse and talented seasonal camp team.
- Conduct regular team evaluations and provide feedback and coaching to ensure team development and performance.
- Foster a positive team culture that prioritizes camper experience, team well-being, and professional growth.
Camper & Family Engagement:
- Serve as the primary point of contact for camper families, ensuring effective communication and responsive customer service.
- Address camper and family concerns in a timely and professional manner.
- Collaborate with school partners and community organizations to enhance camper recruitment and engagement.
Logistics & Operations:
- Coordinate transportation, meal services, and facility use to ensure a seamless camp experience.
- Manage the camp budget, ensuring efficient use of resources and alignment with financial goals.
- Oversee health and safety protocols, including emergency preparedness and medical procedures.
Collaboration & Reporting:
- Work closely with Change Summer leadership to align camp programming with organizational goals.
- Provide regular updates and reports on camp operations, including key performance metrics and camper outcomes.
- Participate in post-season evaluation and planning for future program improvements.
Qualifications
- A bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in youth development, education, or a related field.
- Dedication to the mission of Change Summer and a commitment to equity and inclusion.
- At least 3–5 years of experience in leadership (preferably in the camp industry, but not a requirement), youth programming, or educational administration.
- Strong leadership skills with the ability to manage and inspire a seasonal team.
- Excellent problem-solving and decision-making abilities, with a proactive approach to challenges.
- Ability to build strong relationships with campers, families, team, and community partners.
- Strong organizational skills with experience managing budgets, logistics, and daily camp operations.
- Experience with risk management and safety protocols in a camp or youth program setting.
- Ability to work independently while also collaborating effectively within a team.
- Flexibility, adaptability, and a positive attitude in a fast-paced, dynamic camp environment.
Specific Work Requirements/Location
- This is a full-time, seasonal position running approximately April through August.
- Camp will be based in four specific locations in the Washington, DC Area and the Day Camp Director must be on-site during the summer months.
- Some evening and weekend work may be required, particularly leading up to camp opening.
- Limited remote work may be possible during the planning phase before camp begins.
