The Controller is primarily responsible for supporting the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) in the leadership and performance management of the accounting department employees, and overseeing the general accounting and financial reporting functions, including the enforcement and creation of accounting policies and procedures, and the production of accurate and timely financial information for Channing House. Additional responsibilities include taking the lead on the annual budget process and annual audit. Together with the entire team at Channing House, your role contributes to promoting a healthy and vibrant home for our residents.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
This position will be responsible for, but not limited to the following essential duties and responsibilities:
General Responsibilities:
- Responsible for supervising the accounting procedures of the company.
- Produces accurate financial statements monthly in a timely manner.
- Responsible for supervising the accounting team members, including performance management, and staffing functions.
- Audit the work of the accounting department.
- Engage in critical and confidential aspects of accounting.
- Responsible for the development of policies, systems, special financial studies, etc. of major importance.
- Advise management on matters of fiscal procedure and importance for the organization.
- Ensure compliance with the financial procedures of the organization.
- Works with confidential data, which, if disclosed, might have significant internal effect or minor external effect.
- Maintain month-end schedules, bank, investment and account reconciliations, journal entries and the preparation of month-end financial statements and related reports for CFO.
- Assists with preparing year-end audit schedules, annual budget worksheets, data gathering and analysis, and other financial schedules and reports as requested.
- Supporting CEO and management team with financial and budget matters during CFO absence.
- Supporting and backing up the accounting team including billing and payroll as needed.
- Develops, prepares and maintains financial reports and spreadsheets using Excel, or other software in order to perform reconciliations and provide information to staff.
- Prepares annual budget work papers and analysis.
- Leads staff in the preparation of year-end audit schedules and through the audit engagement.
- Ensures that policies are followed related to invoice coding, 1099 reporting, and new vendor selection by assisting directors with providing correct information.
- Processes new resident financial criteria report.
- Prepares reports and performs analysis as requested by CFO.
- Implements new systems and software as appropriate.
- Reconcile bank accounts on a monthly basis.
Years of Related Professional Experience:
- 5 years of related experience
- Equivalent combination of education and experience welcomed
Educational/Position Requirements:
- BS degree required
- Specialty in Business Administration, Accounting, or Finance preferred
- CPA, CMA or other related certification preferred
- Nonprofit experience a plus
Computer/Software/Technical Applications:
- Ability to use a computer
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite
- Accounting, Database, Internet software
- Proficient in financial statement preparation
- Working knowledge of GAAP
Languages:
- Ability to speak and comprehend English the primary language used in the workplace; ability to speak and/or comprehend other languages utilized by clients is a plus.
