QUALIFICATIONS:
- Master's Degree
- Valid/Current New Mexico School Counselor License
- Must become a certified driver to transport students
REPORTS TO: Principal
JOB GOAL:
To help students resolve personal, emotional, and social problems which interfere with their adjustment to school and their capacity to set goals for a productive future.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Perform counseling services with individual students to correct those personal, academic social, or emotional maladjustments related to their educational and social progress.
- Perform counseling service with parents as an integral part of the task of helping students, to increase the parents’ understanding, their constructive participation in resolving their child’s problems, and their knowledge and use of appropriate resources available.
- Collaborate with parents in networking for positive student change.
- Supervise the referral of students to, and serves as liaison with, such outside agencies as the Welfare Department, Child Placement Bureau, Juvenile Court, and the like, as appropriate.
- Make home visits for the purpose of gathering helpful information on a student’s background.
- Work to discover and develop special abilities of students.
- Work with students on an individual or group basis in the solution of personal problems related to such problems as home and family relations, health and emotional adjustment, and improving social skills.
- Provide in-service training in guidance for teachers and student teachers.
- Provide system support.
- Work with teachers and other staff members to familiarize them with the general range of services offered by the student personnel services department, and to improve the educational prospects of individual students who begin counseling.
- Provide crisis intervention as needed.
- Consult teachers and provide classroom guidance lessons.
- Provide case management as needed for child/family when immediate needs threaten the ability of a child to be mentally and/or physically able to progress in the classroom.
- Serves as a facilitator of Child Study Teams throughout the year
- Perform other duties as assigned.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Walking, standing, sitting, bending, kneeling and squatting, climbing stairs, speaking and listening, reaching with hands and arms, having full mobility of fingers/hands to finger, handle or feel, close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus, carrying, lifting, and moving up to 25 pounds and/or moving light furniture may be required.

Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:
- Maintain emotional control under stress, and work with frequent interruptions.
- Some districtwide and statewide travel.
- Occasional and prolonged and irregular working hours.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Must be able to work within various degrees of noise and temperature. Interruptions of work are routine. Flexibility and patience are required. Must be self-motivated and able to complete job assignments without direct supervision. After-hour work may be required. May make site visits as needed. May work under stressful conditions on occasion.
