A Level 2 Equipment technician for the food industry is responsible for troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining equipment. Technicians must be flexible and able to handle and work through multiple priorities. They work with a sense of urgency to ensure equipment downtime is kept to a minimum. Preventative maintenance is key to the success of our operation and technicians ensure these are performed as planned to maintain optimum operating efficiency. Technicians work closely with members of the manufacturing and logistics teams. They often work unsupervised and so must be self-starters and willing to address challenges and concerns without being told. Our technicians are expected to work on any piece of equipment. They are also expected to practice continuous improvement and personal development. Our technicians work as part of a team and are expected to make a full contribution to the success of the team.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Safely troubleshoot and perform repairs on equipment while following all lockout and plant safety procedures, including the use of required PPE.
- Diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair production equipment from blueprints, schematics, and technical manuals. A complete understanding of electrical and troubleshooting skills and experience are required.
- Conduct regular monitoring of production equipment for proper operation.
- Notify supervisors or managers of any potential equipment issues or abnormalities that could cause personal injury, mechanical downtime, or equipment failure.
- Perform preventive maintenance on production equipment (meat stuffers, grinders, vacuum sealers, flow wrappers, vertical baggers, automated slicers, tray sealers, and other equipment found in a meat processing and slicing facility).
- Work from and enter required information into a maintenance database (CMMS) in a timely manner.
- Maintain organization of Maintenance Areas and any other area where repair work is in progress.
- Assist and participate in training programs and on-the-job training.
- Follow and help enforce all safety procedures and GMPs.
- Perform other tasks that may be assigned or may be required to ensure production lines are kept running efficiently.
- Must be willing to work overtime as may be required at times.
- Must be willing to help cover days off for other members of the maintenance team.
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Advanced knowledge of food processing equipment.
- Industrial electronic wiring and controls
- Troubleshooting of HMI’s.
- Proficient in reading electrical schematics
- Abilities to troubleshooting hydraulic and pneumatic systems.
- Proficient understanding of gear, chain, and belt drives and how to repair these drive systems.
- Knowledge and understanding of three-phase AC motors and variable frequency drives.
- Understanding and knowledge of PM procedures and the abilities to follow SOP for the equipment to ensure safety and quality
Qualifications:
- Skilled in electrical troubleshooting of control circuits and exhibit the ability to safely work with single and three phase voltages up to 480 volts.
- Experience with servo drives / motors.
- Experience repairing and replacing mechanical drive components including bearings, chains, sprockets, and gear reducers.
- Ability to read and write in English. Experience with Italian or German manufacturing equipment is a plus.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and follow rules and procedures.
- Ability to work independently and in a team-oriented environment.
- Willingness to make decisions, act upon them, and accept accountability.
- Mechanical aptitude with initiative to get involved, ask questions, and learn how to work through difficult repairs.
- High School Diploma or GED required. A 2- or 4-year technical degree or related certifications or training are a plus.
- Minimum of 4 years maintenance experience in an industrial manufacturing setting. Experience in a food production facility is a plus.
- Must be able to lift 50 lbs., climb ladders, and work in tight spaces or on platforms in and around machinery.
- All candidates must pass a pre-employment drug test.
- Knowledge of total quality management tools such as lean manufacturing, continuous improvement, 5S, and others and how to apply these in a manufacturing setting is a plus.
- Ability to solve problems and present effective and efficient solutions in a clear and concise manner.
- Ability to prioritize workload and multi-task. Must be detail oriented and organized, yet flexible and able to deal with changes in priorities.
- The ability to work in a cold, wet environment and stand for 4-6 hours at a time.
