We are hiring! Charles County Government is currently recruiting for Roads Equipment Operator IV to become a part of the Department of Public Works Team.


The hiring salary is $49,190.51 annually.  


The Department of Public Works is seeking a Roads Equipment Operator IV to operate gasoline and diesel vehicles and equipment. Performs a wide range of tasks associated with road and right-of-way repair and maintenance; snow removal; flood containment; drainage, erosion, or sediment control systems, and emergency response for road conditions and weather events. Addresses and resolves complex preventive maintenance requirements, corrective maintenance issues, and work requests in a safe, efficient, and quality manner with a strong focus on customer service and in compliance with applicable codes, standards, and regulations. 

  • Reviews work orders or instructions to determine work activities. Identifies materials and tools required and estimates time needed to complete the work. Purchases or orders materials in accordance with county procurement policies and distributes to the appropriate location.
  • Operates vehicles and equipment to include, but not be limited to, medium duty trucks, heavy duty trucks including dump trucks, tractor trailers, bucket trucks, equipment transporters, large capacity loaders, backhoes, power shovels, tractors, chippers, and equivalent types of equipment.  Checks vehicle or equipment for any safety or other concerns prior to operation. 
  • Transports team members, equipment, tools, and materials to work sites.
  • Diagnoses the cause and related symptoms of any road or drainage concern. Implements appropriate procedures or safeguards if the continued use of the road or drainage system could be hazardous.
  • Prepares work site to ensure the safety of employees and motorists. Sets out signs and cones to warn of obstacles, unsafe conditions, or repair work. When needed, ensures adequate staffing is present to flag motorists. 
  • Maintains the safety and cleanliness of the work area and safeguards assets, such as equipment, tools, and materials. Controls traffic passing near, in, or around work areas. Signals Equipment Operators to facilitate alignment, movement, or adjustment of materials and equipment.
  • Repairs and maintains roads by patching potholes and resurfacing damaged sections of roads and road shoulders. 
  • Installs, repairs, or replaces road signs and drainage pipes. Measures and cuts pipe or posts to required length using appropriate tools. 
  • Excavates, compacts, and grades soil for proper sediment and erosion control. 
  • Removes debris and vegetation from roads and roadsides for adequate travel and visibility. 
  • Clears debris from culverts, catch basins, drop inlets, ditches, and other drain structures. 
  • Conducts quality control and assurance procedures to confirm the maintenance or repair is complete and the road or drainage system can be used safely and reliably. 
  • Responds to road emergencies for road conditions and weather events, transporting any needed equipment, tools, or materials. Ensures adequate precautions are taken until the road can be safely traveled.
  • Restocks salt dome with road salt as needed.
  • Documents work performed in a clear, detailed but concise and timely manner. Documentation should reflect work performed by the employee and include the time and materials used. 
  • Cooperates with employees in other departments, divisions, and agencies to safety resolve issues in a timely manner.
  • Supports supervisory personnel by training, guiding, and advising less experienced employees and providing feedback on performance. 
  • Attends weekly safety meetings.
  • Performs other duties as assigned. 

Education and Experience:

High school diploma or an acceptable equivalency diploma (GED). Four (4) years of progressively responsible experience operating medium to heavy duty vehicles and equipment, or an equivalent combination of education, experience, and training.

Licenses or Certifications:

Must possess a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL), Class A is required.

Flagger Certification (preferred). 

Special Requirements/Qualifications:

PLEASE NOTE:  THIS IS A CDL POSITION, AND EMPLOYEES IN THIS POSITION ARE SUBJECT TO RANDOM DRUG AND ALCOHOL SCREENING.

Subject to call back in emergencies. 

May serve in on-call duty on a rotational basis.

Work is subject to frequent interruptions.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: 

  • Knowledge of codes, standards, regulations, and practices related to traffic signs and road construction, improvement, repair, and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of the design, use, maintenance, and repair of equipment, tools, and materials used in the work.
  • Knowledge of traffic laws, rules, and regulations and safe driving practices.
  • Knowledge of County policies and procedures, standard operational practices, and safety regulations.
  • Knowledge of customer service and quality standards.
  • Knowledge of basic office procedures, computers, and iPads.
  • Ability to read and understand work orders, plans, specifications, and instructions.
  • Ability to make precisely coordinated movements and grasp or assemble small objects.
  • Ability to successfully communicate, both orally and in writing.  
  • Ability to actively listen to customers, coworkers, and supervisors.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Skill to diagnose the cause and related symptoms of malfunctions and proficiently make repairs. 
  • Skill to safely operate vehicles, equipment, tools, and personal protective equipment.
  • Skill to prepare accurate records and reports.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The work is regularly active with periods of heavy exertion. The position requires employees to walk or stand for long periods; lift and carry up to 100 pounds; climb stairs, ladders, and scaffolding; bend, kneel, crouch, and crawl; reach, hold, grasp, and turn objects; feel the size, shape, and temperature of items; and use fingers to operate computer or typewriter keyboards. The work requires the ability to speak normally, to use normal or aided vision and hearing, and to detect odors.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Principal duties of this job are performed in a shop or field environment with some work performed outside during inclement weather.

Reports To:  Road Maintenance Supervisor or Traffic Safety and Sign Maintenance Supervisor. May temporarily report to other supervisory personnel.

Supervises:  May provide supervision and direction to employees in the absence of the supervisor.

Salary : $49,191 - $79,689
