Temporary Position
$17.75 per hour, 15-20 hours per week
The Parent Center Secretary is committed to providing information to parents and families to support them with working as equal partners with the school system. Each parent center secretary seeks to:
- Increase parental involvement in the early intervention and special education decision making process.
- Increase collaborative relationships through information and training.
- Assist families in resolving concerns and making informed decisions regarding their child's education.
- Provide information about disabilities and school system and community resources.
QUALIFICATIONS
Must have knowledge of the following:
- The Individualized Education Program (IEP) Process
- Understanding of the challenges faced by children with disabilities and their families
- Parental rights and dispute resolution processes in early intervention and special education
Must be willing to be trained in the following:
- The Individualized Family Service Plan (IFSP) and the Extended IFSP process
- State and Federal special education law and policy
- Knowledge of phases of child development and ability to address related family educational concerns The specific CCPS programs available to children with disabilities, including working knowledge necessary to inform families of options
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Disseminate information from the MSDE to families through a variety of methods.
- Participate in MSDE, local school system and community trainings.
- Provide information, referrals, workshops, and direct support through a variety of strategies for families, educators, and the community to assist in understanding special education and early intervention.
- Provide direct parent support by phone, face to face meetings, or emails.
- Arrange parent-to-parent contact, social or support activities.
- Provide education about the IEP process, including preparation for the IEP meeting, implementation of services, and reasonable expectations.
- Collaborate with the Director for Special Education to draft grant applications.
- Collect, maintain, and analyze data on individual calls, face to face meetings, and emails to submit to MSDE DSE/EIS Family Support Maintenance and upkeep of the physical parent center to include the organization of resources, lending library, and sign-in/sign-out processes.
ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
The environmental factors and/or physical requirements of this position include the following: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to have ordinary ambulatory skills sufficient to visit other locations; and the ability to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, and manipulate (lift, carry, move) light to medium weights of 10-50 pounds. Requires good hand-eye coordination, arm, hand and finger dexterity, including ability to grasp, and visual acuity to use a keyboard. The employee frequently is required to sit, reach with hands and arms, talk and hear.
