The Litigation Paralegal provides critical support to attorneys during all phases of litigation, from the initiation of a case through trial, post-trial appeals and subrogation claims after settlement. This role requires a deep understanding of the litigation process, excellent organizational skills, and the ability to handle a high volume of work with precision and efficiency. The Litigation Paralegal will be responsible for conducting legal research, managing case files, complying with court deadlines, drafting legal documents and responses to discovery, and assisting with trial preparation.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Case Management:
· Organize and maintain case files, including correspondence, pleadings, and discovery documents.
· Ensure effective service of process on defendants.
· Monitor dockets and comply with all court deadlines.
· Track case deadlines and ensure timely filings and submissions.
· Assist attorneys in preparing for trials, hearings, and meetings.
· Dispute subrogation claims as necessary, negotiate reductions, and ensure all subrogation claims are documented and paid.
· At close of case, arrange client wrap up meeting and request reviews.
Legal Research:
· Conduct thorough legal research on case law, statutes, regulations, and legal articles.
· Summarize findings and present them to attorneys in a clear and concise manner.
Document Preparation:
· Draft, review, and revise legal documents, including contracts, pleadings, affidavits, motions, and discovery materials.
· Assist in the preparation of legal arguments, briefs, and memoranda.
· Follow up with clients on medical treatments, and obtain additional medical records, as necessary. Coordinate nurse paralegal medical reviews. Request narrative reports from client physicians and follow up until received.
· Prepare and file paperwork for probate approval of settlement where necessary.
Client Interaction:
· Communicate with clients to gather information, provide updates, and assist with document preparation, including discovery response.
· Respond to client inquiries under the direction of an attorney.
· Request and obtain documentation of lost wages and other economic damages.
Trial Preparation and Support:
· Assist attorneys in all aspects of trial preparation, including organizing trial binders, exhibits, and witness materials.
· Provide on-site support during trials, including managing documents, exhibits, and coordinating witnesses.
· Assist with post-trial activities, such as preparing appeal documents and managing trial records.
Administrative Support:
· Coordinate and manage attorney calendars, including scheduling meetings, depositions, and court appearances.
· Schedule depositions, hire court reporters, and schedule pre-depo meetings with client and attorney.
· Handle administrative tasks such as billing, filing, and document management. Maintain organized hard copy and electronic files for all cases.
Court and Filing Duties:
· File legal documents with courts and other government agencies. File complaints in state and federal court.
· Serve legal documents to involved parties as required.
Compliance and Confidentiality:
· Maintain confidentiality of all client and case information.
· Ensure compliance with legal and ethical standards.

TRAVEL
Travel is infrequent, and would be primarily local during the business day. The employee may be required to drive a vehicle for business travel.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
Education: Bachelor's degree in Paralegal Studies. Paralegal certification from an ABA-approved program preferred.
Experience: 5 Years previous experience as a paralegal or legal assistant in personal injury litigation, including in federal court. Michigan PIP (personal injury protection) experience is a plus, as is experience resolving subrogation claims.
Skills:
- In-depth knowledge of litigation procedures, court rules, and legal terminology.
- Proficient in legal research tools (e.g., Westlaw, LexisNexis) and eDiscovery platforms.
- Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail.
