The Charles E. Smith Jewish Day School in Rockville, MD is seeking an outstanding high school Hebrew language educator to join our High School faculty for the 2025-2026 school year. Our Hebrew program is based on the proficiency model guided by the ACTFL standards for second language instruction.
Successful candidates will have at least three years of demonstrated success teaching Hebrew as a second language to adolescent students, and will have familiarity and experience with teaching the proficiency model. The ideal candidate is passionate and charismatic, and uses a student-centered approach to teaching. They are experienced in effective methods of assessment of second language skills, and are familiar with recognized standards of language instruction, in particular with ACTFL standards. Candidates demonstrate a willingness to participate fully in the life of a vibrant school community, and have demonstrated success in working collaboratively as part of a team.
Salary $46,490.00 - $96,902.00. Pay is commensurate with education and experience, and is calculated according to a school-wide pay scale.
Responsibilities:
- Teach Hebrew language and culture to students in grades 9-12, including identifying appropriate authentic texts, lesson planning and unit planning
- Participate in team meetings to review curriculum and discuss student progress
- Work collaboratively within the Upper School Hebrew department and high school faculty
- Student advising
- Other duties as assigned by the High School Principal
Qualifications
- BA in Hebrew language, education, or comparable certification; MA or PhD preferred but not required. Fluency in Hebrew language required; native speaker preferred.
- Minimum three years of successful teaching experience in collaborative working environments, ideally in a high school setting.
- Experience in differentiated instruction, project based learning, student-centered instruction and working with students with diverse learning needs preferred.
- Fluency with technology required.
