The Charles E. Smith Jewish Day School in Rockville, MD is seeking candidates to fill the position of Middle School Visual Arts Teacher for the 2025-2026 school year. Members of the Arts department work collaboratively in designing and delivering an outstanding Arts education to middle school students in a supportive, engaging and rich environment which values the whole child. Additionally, this position requires oversight of Arts integration for the entire middle school to collaborate with faculty across disciplines.
The ideal candidate will be a dynamic individual who is able to infuse a passion for the visual arts within their classroom and the school community as a whole. In search of candidates who have experience with the specific needs of middle school students. This candidate will also oversee the middle school visual arts portion of the end-of-year Arts festival (Arts Chai-lights). The ideal candidate has at least three years of teaching experience. Leading candidates have demonstrated success at and enjoy collaborating as an active member of a team, are comfortable teaching in and promoting a pluralistic environment that emphasizes identity development and places importance on the value of community. The ideal candidate has strong interpersonal skills, is comfortable with and skilled at working with a wide range of learners, has demonstrated success in integrating positive behavior management in neuro-diverse classrooms, and enjoys working with young adolescents. Fluency with technology required.
Pay is commensurate with education and experience, and is calculated according to a school-wide pay scale. This position is eligible for benefits.
Responsibilities include:
- The position is expected to be full time, teaching multiple sections of Art and Design and/or Sculpture.
- Oversight of the middle school Visual Arts portion of Arts Chai-lights.
- Partnering with faculty across disciplines for arts integration within the classroom and across the school.
- Lesson planning, grading, and communicating with students and families regarding student learning;
- Participating in team meetings to coordinate and refine curricula;
- Participating in meetings with counselors, colleagues, and administration to discuss student progress;
- Working collaboratively within the Upper School Art department and middle school faculty;
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Possess a BA in Art, Art Education, or a related field. Advanced degree preferred but not required.
- Experience in student-centered differentiated instruction, universal design for learning, collaborative problem solving, and working with students with diverse learning needs preferred.
