School Overview: Charles R. Drew Charter School opened in 2000 as Atlanta’s first charter school and is an integral part of holistic neighborhood revitalization led by the East Lake Foundation. Drew Charter School serves over 1,600 children in Pre-K through 12th grade, growing ultimately to serve over 2,000 students from “cradle -to-college” with two onsite early learning partners. Drew’s innovative academic model of Project-Based Learning (PBL), incorporating a Science Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) theme, has effectively closed both the achievement gaps and the opportunity gaps for children from diverse backgrounds.
Position Description
Science instructional coaches are teacher leaders who are responsible for supporting effective 5-12 science instruction and student learning. The Science Coach will support all 5-12 staff in the implementation of the site science plan and program. The Coach will work directly with teachers in a school providing classroom-based demonstrations, collaborative and one-on-one support, and facilitating teacher inquiry and related professional development. The Coach will focus on enhancing teachers’ ability to provide instruction that builds students’ sense of engagement in the ownership of learning. The Coach will also work with administrators and teachers to collect and analyze data, interpret, and use it to guide instructional decisions. This position reports to the Director of Coaching.

Performance Responsibilities
- Directly coach teachers with regard to science content, STEAM integration, and PBL/PrBL services including:
- Regularly observing classes
- Debriefing observations with teachers
- Co-planning lessons and projects
- Modeling techniques
- Integrate PBL/STEAM services led by Science and Math to ensure creative and innovative projects
- Ensure the implementation of Science standards by building the capacity of teachers, but also by providing direct services to students as needed
- Be chief advocate for the content area
- Represent the concerns of the content area to the leadership team
- Coordinate the ordering of resources including textbooks, materials, supplies, and equipment
- Identify professional development needs within the department and help coordinate staff participation
- Coordinate professional development/on-boarding for incoming staff
- Build and cultivate extra-curricular activities (after-school, summer, external organizations, etc.) related to the content area, specifically co-facilitating Science Fair and Science Olympiad
- In conjunction with leadership team, help analyze data to determine curriculum priorities
- Collaborate with the other coaches in the content area to facilitate vertical alignment initiatives
- Manage the MAP administration
- Support the implementation of Mastery Connect
- Other duties as assigned
- Minimum of T4-Certification in Middle Grades Science (4-8) OR Science (6-12) OR passed the GACE Assessment OR have reciprocity eligibility
- Bachelor's Degree in related content
- Deep and broad understanding of mathematical content, including the specialized knowledge needed for teaching
- Solid knowledge of the instructional context from elementary through high school
- Expertise in using and helping others use effective instructional and assessment practices that are informed by knowledge of mathematical learning trajectories
- Leadership skills necessary to influence and support educational efforts to improve the teaching and learning of mathematics.
- History of student success in the content area
- Evidence of success in working with teachers/adults such as mentoring new teachers, developing student interns, serving as a grade-level leader, providing professional development, etc.
- Strong interpersonal skills (communication, problem solving, conflict management, collaboration) necessary to share research based instructional approaches with teachers and administrators and provide advice, mentoring, and coaching
- Strong organizational skills
- Minimum of three years successful teaching experience
- Salary Range: $62,580-$127,104
- Work Days: 200
