Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

GENERAL FACULTY RESPONSIBILITIES/ACTIONS:

  • Advances the education, research, and clinical missions of the university in collaboration with the Department Chair, staff, and administrative leadership. 
  • Facilitates and supports the training of students. Champions improvements in education of students, residents, or fellows in their assigned department. 
  • Serves as a role model, leads by example, and teaches students, residents, or fellows. Acts as mentor to students, fosters the success of students, encourages academic excellence, engagement, personal growth, and development of students. Assists students to optimize an educational experience. Assists the student's socialization into a disciplinary culture. Provides support to students in managing the rigors of school. 
  • Contributes to curriculum development, teaching and research activities in various and specific disciplines. 
  • Contributes defined hours for teaching load and student engagement within the department. 
  • Communicates effectively with Department Chair, faculty, and staff. 
  • Applies knowledge of standard concepts, practices, and procedures. Maintains up-to-date knowledge of current policies, procedures, and regulations. 
  • Demonstrates and promotes interest in continuous professional development as demonstrated in research publications and/or attending and providing training sessions.

CLINICAL FACULTY RESPONSIBILITIES/ACTIONS:

Clinical Faculty are directly responsible for:

  • Quality assurance of patient care.
  • Supervising the activities of medical students assigned to them.
  • Teaching clinical care either by demonstration or discussion.
  • Evaluating clinical proficiency of students in accordance with the policies established by the College of Medicine.
  • Advising students and the Clerkship Directors of those who are in need of remediation.

The following actions are required to meet these responsibilities:

  • Observe each student and furnish help with any problems encountered through advice or demonstration.
  • Review each patient record after completion of the examination, checking for thoroughness, validity of findings, and the student’s analytic sense in diagnosis, treatment decisions and follow-up.
  • Repeat any components of the history and physical exam as needed and correct any incorrect student health assessment findings.
  • Ensure that the student follows through with the case disposition and patient education of findings, diagnosis, treatment plan and advice.
  • Evaluate the performance of each student clinician on each patient and give feedback to the student.
  • Help student clinicians reach the expected levels of proficiency in clinical skills and judgment.
  • Observe and evaluate the performance of student clinicians.
  • Record student clinician attendance, punctuality and appearance.

EDUCATION:

  • MD or DO from a regionally accredited institution.
  • Board Certification in specialty of instruction  

EXPERIENCE:

  • Academic credentials appropriate for appointment to the COM faculty at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor or Professor.

  • Strong interpersonal skills. 
  • Commitment to social justice and values-driven curricula. 
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with administration, staff, peers and full-time and community-based faculty. 
  • Strong verbal/written communication skills. 
  • Knowledge of and commitment to the unique mission of CDU. 
  • Working knowledge of general CDU University and assigned department policy and procedures.

  • The ability to perform highly detailed work with sustained attention and care while providing/obtaining information on numerous inquiries is paramount to success in this position.
