What are the responsibilities and job description for the Waterfront Operations Manager position at Charleston Community Sailing?
Charleston Community Sailing’s mission is to encourage and celebrate the responsible use and long-term stewardship of Charleston Waterways by fostering educational and recreational opportunities for all members of our community. The Waterfront Operations Manager will oversee all water activities, dock management, and programmatic activities as needed.

Reports to: Executive Director
Major Job Responsibilities and Duties:
On the Water Management:
- Work with the Executive Director to plan the delivery of the overall program/activities in accordance with the mission and goals of the organization.
- Ensure that program activities operate within the policies and procedures of the organization.
- Develop and/or maintain forms and records to document program activities
- Maintain liability waivers and staff/volunteer hour records.
- Engage with volunteers for appropriate program activities using established volunteer management practices.
- Ensure all staff members receive orientation and appropriate training in accordance with organizational and industry standards.
- Supervise program staff by providing direction, input and feedback.
- Communicate with clients and other stakeholders to gain community support for the program and solicit input to improve the program.
- Coordinate the delivery of services among different program activities to increase effectiveness and efficiency.
- Assisting to help identify and resolve the risks associated with programmatic activities and take appropriate action to control the risks.
- Monitor the program activities on a regular basis and conduct evaluations.
- Report evaluation findings to the Executive Director and recommend changes to enhance the program, as appropriate.
Dock Management:
- Support the sailing center and facility while monitoring safety.
- Handle daily boat maintenance and keep fleets of sailboats & safety boats in a state of readiness.
- Enforce CCS rules and provide a friendly, and above all, safe environment.
- Maintain safety boats with gas, oil, required equipment, first aid, etc.
- Manage and organize all equipment, marks, PFDs, sail and maintenance shed.
- Responsible for general maintenance of facility and docks.
- Develop maintenance procedures and ensure implementation.
- Carry out inspections of the facilities to identify and resolve issues.
- Plan and oversee all repair and installation activities.
- Monitor equipment inventory and place orders when necessary.
- Manage relationships with contractors and service providers.
- Keep maintenance logs and maintain/report on daily activities of boat use and classes.
Qualifications:
- Skills include but not limited to:
- Level 1 required; Level 2 desired.
- Strong written and oral communication skills
- Excellence in talent management with the ability to manage, collaborate, and develop high-performance staff and teams
- Ability to work effectively in collaboration with diverse groups of people along the dimensions of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, socio economic status, age, physical abilities, and religious beliefs
Salary is one component of Charleston Community Sailing’s total compensation package, which also includes:
- Salary range: $38,000 - $50,000 per year
- Employer paid medical insurance plan.
- Unlimited hours of PTO annually.
- Flexible hours and compensatory time as described in the Employee Handbook.
