Position Summary
The Transportation Coordinator is responsible for ensuring the Ironton Ferry is properly maintained and functioning, while meeting Federal, State, Coast Guard and MDOT standards. The Transportation Coordinator serves as the primary point of contact for anything Ferry related, and regularly communicates Ironton Ferry related updates, news, and services to the general public. The Transportation Coordinator maintains Ironton Ferry grounds, office, and records. The Transportation Coordinator reports directly to the Charlevoix County Transportation Authority Board.
Primary Duties & Responsibilities:
- Regularly works with the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) to complete quarterly and AOR reporting as well as payment requests for reimbursement.
- Maintains compliance with Federal, State, and Coast Guard regulations and requirements.
- Develops annual Ironton Ferry budget in conjunction with MDOT, and Charlevoix County.
- Coordinates drug testing for all Ironton Ferry staff including regular and random drug tests.
- Maintains Ironton Ferry records including drug testing information, data reporting, schedules, maintenance/repairs information, manuals, schematics, and anything related to the Ironton Ferry.
- Submits payroll sheets, invoices, and payables.
- Assists with audit requests as needed.
- Schedules inspections and maintains necessary certifications for the Ironton Ferry.
- Receives and processes Ironton Ferry cash deposits.
- Updates the Ironton Ferry portion of the Charlevoix County website, and Ironton Ferry Facebook page as needed with closures, openings, delays, etc.
- Ensures all Ironton Ferry related programs, software, cameras, etc., are functioning properly. This includes the streaming camera system, digital road sign system, Token Transit payment system, alert system, etc.
- Creates blank logs for ridership, tallies up completed sheets and enters data into appropriate systems for reporting.
- Handles employee relations matters and submits new hire, separation, and status change forms with all necessary documentation.
- Oversees the condition and needs of the parking area, shed office, storage room and lawn areas.
- Arranges porta potty services as needed.
- Oversees physical maintenance and operation of the drive, dock, boat signage, and the cameras on each dock.
- Coordinates dry docking the Ironton Ferry.
- Maintains necessary stock of supplies such as tickets and cleaning supplies and keeps the Ironton Ferry building tidy and organized.
- Serves as the spokesperson for the Ironton Ferry and responsible for resolving customer complaints as well as answering general Ironton Ferry questions.
- Participates in emergency management exercises and discussions as needed.
- Attends the monthly Charlevoix County Transportation Authority meetings.
- Attends MDOT meetings and required trainings as needed.
- Other duties and responsibilities may be assigned as needed.

Mandatory Requirements:
- Valid Michigan Driver’s License
- 50-ton Captain’s License or ability to obtain licensure within a specified amount of time
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Bachelor’s Degree in related field from an accredited university preferred or equivalent experience.
Job Location & Working Conditions
This position is based in a climate-controlled office environment which may require long periods in a stationary position operating a computer and other office machinery as well as outdoors on the Ironton Ferry and surrounding grounds. May be required to lift/move up to 50 pounds. May work in inclement weather including heat, rain, and sometimes snow. Occasional travel to Charlevoix County buildings and required trainings/meetings may be required.
