What are the responsibilities and job description for the Adaptive Programming Recreation Specialist position at Charlotte County BCC?
JOB SUMMARY
Performs work organizing, coaching, and conducting adaptive recreational activities or sports at a recreation area or centers in the County. Responsibilities include ensuring that proper recreation apparatus, equipment, and supplies needed for the specific programs/events are available. May act as a lead worker over one or more assistants carrying out recreational activities. Work is performed under general supervision.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Develops, monitors, and evaluates sports, recreation, and/or leisure programs for individuals with disabilities of all ages.
- Assists in the implementation of programs and special events by providing guidance for the inclusion of adaptive components. Promotes programs and may assist in obtaining relevant sponsorships or grants.
- Develops, monitors, and evaluates adaptive related practices to ensure programs and services are provided to meet reasonable accommodations.
- Develop adaptive protocols to ensure safe activities.
- Reviews accommodation requests and communicates to supervisor and other key staff.
- Coordinates, or facilitates adaptive training topics for the division. May provide Adaptive or Inclusion related staff/volunteer trainings.
- Explores and identifies community resources to support individuals and the development of sports, recreation, and leisure activities/ events for individuals with disabilities.
- Plans and conducts events and activities for groups of individuals with disabilities that may include Special Olympics, wheelchair sports, arts and crafts, aquatics, nature study, and/or other related adaptive activities.
- Maintains records and prepares reports/correspondence as required.
- Establishes and monitors objectives, guidelines, and office procedures pertaining to adaptive recreation programs and services.
- Procures materials and equipment necessary to conduct adaptive sports/recreation/leisure programs.
- Coordinates inventory and requisitions supplies. Performs maintenance of equipment as needed.
- May participate in the collection of revenues/fees for facility rentals, parking passes, tickets/admissions, programs; prepares daily cash reports and deposits receipts.
- May participate in daily opening and/or closing of facilities.
- May participate setting up and breaking down meeting rooms and facilities for adaptive programs.
- May be required to perform minor maintenance such as cleaning up facilities and replenishing supplies.
- Communicates regularly with the general public; responds to customer questions, requests, complaints, and suggestions regarding adaptive programming in the County.
- Provides exceptional customer assistance, problem-solving, and/or complaint resolution by all forms of communication.
Minimum Education and Experience:
- Associate Degree
- Preferred:
- Parks & Recreation
- Therapeutic Recreation
- Physical Education
- Psychology
- Special Education
- Preferred:
- Or an equivalent combination of relevant training, education and experience.
- Maintain a valid Florida driver’s license
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
• Knowledge of adaptations to rules, regulations, and safety precautions.

• Knowledge of adaptive recreational activities suitable for children and adults.
• Knowledge of transfer techniques.
• Ability to lead and instruct children and adults in the assigned recreational activities.

• Knowledge of standard office computer equipment and software applications, as well as cash registers.
• Ability to work late nights, early mornings, on weekends and holidays.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Stooping, crouching, walking, pulling, lifting, grasping, hearing, seeing up close, seeing far away, kneeling, reaching, pushing, talking, standing, finger movement, repetitive motions, depth perception. Frequent lifting of 10 to 25 pounds; occasional lifting of up to 50 pounds.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work may be performed in either an indoor, environmentally controlled environment or outdoors depending on program objectives.
