JOB SUMMARY
Performs routine maintenance and moderately complex repairs on a variety of heavy equipment, automotive, mechanical, hydraulic, air conditioning, and electrical systems. Degree of complexity in work assignments depends on work experience and skill.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Performs routine maintenance on vehicles and equipment: checks and replaces fluids; drains and replaces oil; collects and recovers Freon; changes and replaces filters; lubricates mechanical parts; installs and replaces blades; rotates, mounts and balances tires; replaces tires, belts, and hoses; checks and replaces batteries; greases equipment; flushes radiators; and performs tune-ups or other preventative maintenance activities as assigned. 
  • Diagnoses and repairs moderately complex mechanical and/or electrical malfunctions of County gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles and equipment, including the following: automobiles, trucks, and lawn mowers; small engine and grounds maintenance equipment; mechanical, hydraulic, air conditioning, and electrical systems; specialized construction machinery; and other maintenance equipment. 
  • Repairs and/or replaces defective parts: overhauls engines; repairs and replaces brakes, transmissions, clutches, motor parts, electrical and electronic systems, hydraulic systems, gear boxes, belts, gaskets, headlights, windshield wipers, filters, tires, turn signals, vehicle fluids, and blades; and maintains related documentation. 
  • Prepares vehicles for auction; removes County decals, property numbers, and County equipment; makes minor repairs; and coordinates delivery of vehicle for detailing.  
  • Inspects and maintains fuel sites; inspects fuel tanks, hoses, and pumps for cracks, leaks, and other damage; makes repairs; monitors and fuel levels before or after fuel deliveries. 
  • May conduct investigations, coordinate various functions, and other details needed to solve the varied technical problems encountered in the maintenance and repair of equipment. 
  • Maintains records of repairs, parts used, and labor expended; obtains parts and supplies as needed. 
  • Operates County vehicles to pick up parts and supplies from vendors to road test vehicles repaired, or to make service calls. 
  • Operates hand tools, modern mechanical power tools, and electrical equipment to assist in tasks assigned. 
  • Performs routine shop maintenance and housekeeping tasks.  
  • Provides on-call after hours support as needed. 
  • Provides exceptional customer assistance, problem-solving, and/or complaint resolution by all forms of communication.
Education and Experience:
An equivalent combination of relevant training, education and experience:
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Three (3) years of experience in performing preventative maintenance and routine mechanical repairs on vehicles and equipment.

Licenses and/or Certificates:
  • Must maintain a valid driver’s license.
  • Preferred:
    • Possession of Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification 
  • Knowledge of departmental policies, plans, and procedures.
  • Knowledge of modern office practices, plans, and procedures.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other job-related computer programs and software applications.
  • Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and techniques used in the repair, maintenance, and reconditioning of a wide variety of maintenance equipment. 
  • Knowledge of the operation and repair of internal combustion gasoline and diesel engines and chassis parts. 
  • Knowledge of hydraulic, compresses air, vacuum and electrical controls, systems, and components. 
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade. 
  • Skill in the proper use and operation of tools and machinery used in automotive repair work. 
  • Skill in effective communication, both orally and in writing.
  • Skill in prioritizing and organizing work.
  • Skill in the use of office equipment such as a computer, multi-line telephone system, scanner, fax machine, and copier.
  • Ability to evaluate the mechanical condition and performance of vehicles and related equipment before and after repair work. 
  • Ability to detect and locate improper operating practices and malfunctions in mechanical equipment and recommend effective solutions. 
  • Ability to interpret and work from electrical schematic sketches and repair diagrams. 
  • Ability to make recommendations and to use resourcefulness and tact in solving new problems. 
  • Ability to maintain records of mechanical maintenance activities. 
  • Ability to ascertain priorities and meet deadlines and objectives. 
  • Ability to act as lead worker, when appropriate, with a team of subordinates and/or peers. 
  • Ability to make recommendations and to use resourcefulness and tact in solving new problems. 
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and reports. 
  • Ability to operate a motor vehicle. 
  • Ability to provide internal/external guidance and customer assistance via all forms of communication. 
  • Ability to use computers for data entry, word processing, and/or accounting purposes.
  • Ability to author reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. 
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with managers, service providers, other employees, and the general public.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Stooping, crouching, walking, pulling, lifting, grasping, hearing, seeing up close, seeing far away, kneeling, reaching, pushing, talking, standing, climbing, finger movement, repetitive motions, depth perception.  Frequent lifting of 10-25 pounds; occasional lifting up to 50 pounds.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work typically requires moderate exposure to one or more disagreeable conditions (i.e., irate customers, outdoors weather conditions, excessive noise, extreme heat, odors, or dust).

This position requires moderate exposure or risk to physical health and/or physical safety (e.g., exposure to environmentally hazardous material, heavy equipment, assault and battery, communicable disease, etc.).
