General Definition of Work

The school nutrition talent development coordinator, under general supervision, performs skill-based work with minimal decision-making discretion providing in person, hands-on training for school nutrition employees in accordance with all policies and procedures, including food safety. Position is responsible for conducting orientation programs, acting as the on-site representative of the school nutrition training center, and monitoring the upkeep of the training center cafeteria. Employee performs complex work to carry out the Board of Education policies under the direction of the Executive Director of School Nutrition.

Place of Work

The normal place of work is on the premises used by Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. Charlotte- Mecklenburg Schools reserves the right to require you to work at such other place(s) as it may reasonably require from time to time.

Essential Functions

  • Adhere to all state, federal, and local laws, policies, and procedures
  • Delivers training to school nutrition employees on record-keeping, ordering systems, proper handling of foods, correct use and care of equipment, maintaining high standards of sanitation and safety according to Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) guidelines, etc.
  • Conduct orientation programs, classroom presentations, and hands-on training for temporary workers, manager trainees, and other staff
  • Facilitate summer training programs for school nutrition staff
  • Ensure safety and cleanliness of the training center and kitchen area
  • Monitor program operations and use of training rooms to ensure equipment is protected and rooms are presentable
  • Assist supervisors with improving and / or creating training materials
  • Supervise and participate in food preparation in school kitchens in the absence of a manager, if requested
  • Perform on-site, hands-on training to assist managers and workers with specific areas of procedures and job tasks
  • Facilitate meetings and attend other related meetings as needed / required
  • Participate in professional development workshops and other training
  • Create an inclusive environment with positive communication / public relations
  • Perform related work as assigned or required

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the principles, practices, and procedures of public school system policies and school nutrition programs
  • Comprehensive knowledge of federal, state, and local regulatory requirements applicable to school system school nutrition programs
  • Comprehensive knowledge of county and school board policies, procedures, and standards regarding school nutrition programs
  • Thorough knowledge of NC Health Department regulations and Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) procedures
  • Skilled in the principles of large quantity food production (600-1200 meal equivalents)
  • Proven ability to manage and understand the needs of a school kitchen, including school kitchen equipment use and care
  • Ability to reflect appropriate response to situations, while maintaining a professional and personal demeanor
  • Ability to learn and use specialized tools, equipment or software related to business needs
  • Ability to implement local, state, and federal rules, guidelines, and procedures into daily business operations
  • Ability to reason, make judgments, and maintain effective working relationships
  • Ability to employ positive communication skills in all settings / mediums
  • Ability to problem-solve utilizing sound judgment
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding school system business
  • Ability to take initiative and work independently
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a deadline-driven, rapidly changing team environment
  • Education and Experience

  • High School diploma or equivalent required
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience in foodservice management required
  • SNA (School Nutrition Association) member preferred
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Special Requirements

  • ServSafe Certified from the National Restaurant Association required
  • Possess and maintain a valid driver's license or ability to provide own transportation
  • Travel to school district buildings and professional meetings
