Summary: The elementary teacher provides support to the instructional process by serving as the classroom leader with specific responsibility for supervising students within the classroom and other assigned areas. The person in this position develops lesson plans and delivers group and individual student instruction within established curriculum guidelines; collaborates with other teachers, other professional staff, and administrators in addressing instructional and/or classroom issues. This person also responds to a wide range of inquiries from students' parents or guardians regarding instructional program and student progress.

Essential Duties: (These duties represent a sample and may vary by position.)

  • Provides all students the best education available anywhere, preparing every child to lead a rich and productive life in the 21 st century.
  • Creates a culture of effectiveness, by setting high standards and expectations for all students.
  • Teaches courses assigned by their principal/supervisor which are aligned to their licensure area; including but not limited to combined grade classes, specialized subject such as math, science or literacy.
  • Prepares course objectives and outlines for course of study following curriculum guidelines or requirements of the state and the school
  • Guides the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals and in accordance with goals established by the CMS Strategic plan.
  • Establishes clear objectives for all lessons, units and projects and communicates those objectives to students. Also provides written evidence of preparation upon request of the principal or his/her designee.
  • Instructs students individually and in groups during the instructional time, using various teaching methods such as but not limited to lectures, discussions, demonstrations, presentations, class projects, use of media, , technology, current research in instruction, tutorials and other tools that provides for student engagement in the learning process and enables students to achieve learning objectives.
    • Adapts teaching methods and instructional materials to meet students' varying needs and interests, including students with disabilities and limited English proficiencies.
  • Assists the administration in implementing all policies and rules governing student life and conduct and, for the classroom, develops reasonable rules of classroom behavior and procedure, and maintains order in the classroom in a fair and just manner.
  • Meets with parents and guardians to discuss their child/ren's progress and to determine priorities for their child/ren and their resource needs.
  • Prepares students for later grades by encouraging them to explore learning opportunities and to persevere with challenging tasks.
  • Prepares materials and classrooms for class activities.
  • Observes and assesses students' performance, behavior, social development, and physical health on a regular basis.
  • Reads books to entire classes or small groups.
  • Provides a variety of materials and resources for children to explore, manipulate, and use, both in learning activities and in imaginative play.
  • Prepares and implements remedial programs for students requiring extra help.
  • Prepares, administers, and grades tests and assignments to assess students' progress.
  • Enforces administration policies and rules governing students in the classroom and on the playground.
  • Assigns and grades class work and homework.
  • Confers with parents or guardians, teachers, counselors and administrators to resolve students' behavioral and academic problems.
  • Encourages parent involvement through school activities, connecting home and schools.
  • Performs safety functions/drills to maintain a safe instructional environment. Takes all necessary safety precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities.
  • Acts as test administrator for the North Carolina Test Program and fulfills requirements as designated in the North Carolina School Test Coordinator's Handbook, the Proctor's Guild for the North Carolina Testing Program and the North Carolina State Board of Education Policy GCS-A-010.
  • Participates in school management and shares responsibility for the total school program. Attends staff meetings, planning meetings for instructional area, and professional development as offered.
  • Maintains accurate and complete records as required by the school, CMS policy and administrative regulations including Personalized Education Plans (PEP) and Individual education Plans (IEP).
  • Participates in personal professional growth activities focused on the acquisition of new and improved skills and knowledge.
  • Uses appropriate techniques and strategies which promote and enhance critical, creative and evaluative thinking capabilities of students.
  • May coordinate and lead class field trips.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.
Education And Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree in education with appropriate subject area.
  • Specialization in specific subject area at a Master's level

Licensing / Certification Requirements

North Carolina certification or credentials to attain North Carolina certification required. Must meet all minimum NC state requirements for certification.

  • Knowledge of human behavior and performance; individuals difference in ability, personality and interests; learning and motivation; psychological research methods; and the assessment and treatment of behavioral and affective disorders.
  • Knowledge of group behavior and dynamics, societal trends and influences, human migrations, ethnicity, cultures and their history and origins.
  • Knowledge of principles and methods for describing the features of land, sea and air masses, including their physical characteristics, locations, interrelationships and distribution of plant, animal and human life.
  • Knowledge of different philosophical systems and religions. This includes their basic principles, values, ethics, ways of thinking, customs, practices, and their impact on human culture.
  • Knowledge of principles involved in strategic planning, resource allocation and leadership techniques.
  • Knowledge of historical events and their causes, indicators and effects on civilizations and cultures.
  • Knowledge of relevant equipment, policies and procedures and strategies to promote effective safety and security operations for the protection of students, data, property and the classroom/school.
  • Knowledge of media production, communication, and dissemination techniques and methods. This includes alternatives ways to inform and educate via written, oral, and visual media.
  • Knowledge of plan and animal organisms, their tissues, cells, functions, interdependences, and interactions with each other and the environment.
  • Knowledge of the theory and techniques required to compose, produce, and perform works of music, dance, visual arts, drama and sculpture.
  • Ability to listen and understand information and ideas presented through spoken words and sentences.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.
