Summary: The classroom teacher supervises students within the classroom and throughout the building and campus during the school day. The classroom teacher creates and delivers lesson plans to students, based on state tested standards and guidelines. This person collects , records, and analyzes academic data and performance throughout the school year. The classroom teacher aligns lessons with those of other teachers. This person also regularly communicates the academic, behavioral, and social emotional progress of students to their families. This person will adhere to the school’s mission, vision and values.
Essential duties:
- Provides all students an education that covers all academic standards for the course taught.
- Creates a culture of the highest behavioral expectations.
- Teaches courses assigned by their principal/supervisor which are aligned to their licensure area; including specialized subjects such as math, science or literacy as well as chosen electives which are structured on the humanities, community, and real-world knowledge and skills.
- Uses appropriate techniques and strategies which promote and enhance critical, creative and evaluative thinking capabilities of students.
- Participates in personal and professional growth activities focused on the acquisition of new and improved skills and knowledge.
- Prepares course objectives and outlines for course of study following the North Carolina Standard Course of Study, curriculum guidelines, or requirements of the state and the school.
- Guides the learning process toward the achievement of standards-based instruction and in accordance with goals established by the state of North Carolina.
- Delivers and communicates clear objectives for all lessons to students. Creates lesson plans for all substitute teachers.
- Instructs students as a class whole, in groups, and individually. Uses a variety of methods to instruct students (i.e. visuals, online lessons, hard copy lessons)
- Develops and presents differentiated lessons to meet the academic needs of all students
- Assists the administration in establishing a set of school/classroom rules consistent with that of the school, and provides fair and constant classroom management.
- Schedules/attends meetings with families to discuss the academic and behavioral needs of students.
- Prepares materials and classrooms for class activities.
- Observes and assesses students’ performance, behavior, social development, and physical health on a regular basis.
- Prepares and delivers tutoring lessons to students who in need of extra assistance
- Creates, administers, and grades tests/quizzes and assignments to assess students’ progress
- Assigns and grades class work and homework.
- Contacts and meets with families, staff, and administrators to resolve various student issues.
- Leads students through all safety drills (i.e. fire, lockdown, shelter)
- Administers/proctors state exams in accordance with appropriate rules and regulations.
- Attends all required meetings (staff, professional development, data, safety procedure, etc.).
- Keeps all records required by the school including intervention plans, 504 plans, and IEP’s.
- Supervises students during hallway transitions, afterschool pickup lines, and at lunch/recess.
- Covers classes for co-workers when absent
- Carries out daily assigned duty (i.e. parking lot set up, lunch duty, etc.)
- Appraises students’ effectiveness and demonstrates successful application of skills and information required to increase effectiveness and strives to maintain and improve professional effectiveness.
- Uses appropriate differentiated instructional strategies and materials that reflect each student’s culture, learning styles, special needs, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
- Adheres to intervention plans, 504 plans and IEP’s.
- Performs related job duties as assigned.
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Education (required)
- Master’s Degree in Education or Content Area content area, or other related field (preferred)
- NC State Licensure in content area required. (Or current enrollment in certification program.)
Knowledge / Skills / Abilities:
- Knowledge of the North Carolina Standard Course of Study.
- Knowledge of North Carolina Testing Program in regards to End of Course Testing.
- Ability to provide instruction that reflects multiple perspectives and multicultural education.
- Ability to infuse technology into curriculum.
- Ability to work effectively with administration, staff, families and the community members.
- Basic computer and reporting skills.
