FLSA Status: Exempt

 

Summary: We are seeking a dynamic health and medical science education teacher who will provide engaging instruction to prepare students for careers in health and medical science. The ideal candidate will inspire students to explore health-related topics, develop essential technical skills, and foster an understanding of career pathways within healthcare. The teacher will ensure that instruction aligns with state and national standards, creating an environment that supports student growth and achievement.

 

Essential Functions:

  • Develop and iterate curriculum for new courses as needed, aligning with division goals, emerging healthcare trends, and student interests.
  • Plan, deliver and evaluate instructional activities aligned with the division’s Health and Medical Science Education curriculum.
  • Facilitate hands-on learning experiences that integrate foundational healthcare concepts, including anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, and patient care.
  • Incorporate the use of simulation equipment, laboratory activities, and technology to provide students with real-world healthcare applications.
  • Prepare students for industry-recognized certifications such as CPR, First Aid, and Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA).
  • Guide students in understanding healthcare career pathways and provide opportunities to explore diverse roles within the health science field.
  • Promote participation in related student organizations, such as HOSA (Future Health Professionals), and encourage involvement in local and state competitions.
  • Assess student learning on an ongoing basis, tailoring instruction to meet individual and group needs.
  • Utilize industry-standard tools, technology, and software to enhance learning experiences.
  • Maintain order and an engaging classroom environment conducive to learning.
  • Collaborate with faculty, administrators, and instructional assistants to design interdisciplinary learning opportunities.
  • Communicate regularly with parents to provide updates on student progress and foster home-school collaboration.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable federal, state, and local policies related to public education.
  • Manage and maintain classroom equipment, materials, and resources effectively, including medical simulators, models, and laboratory supplies.
  • Provide supervision during non-classroom times, including before/after school and during student activities.
  • Participate in professional development to enhance instructional practices and stay current with advancements in health science and education.
  • Promote awareness of healthcare careers and encourage students to pursue health and medical science pathways.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the building principal.

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:

  • Strong understanding of health and medical science principles, medical terminology, and industry trends.
  • Proficiency in using simulation equipment, laboratory tools, and instructional technology.
  • Experience in curriculum development and the ability to adapt courses to emerging healthcare advancements and student needs.
  • Strong classroom management skills and the ability to foster a safe, inclusive learning environment.
  • Effective communication and collaboration skills with students, colleagues, and parents.
  • Ability to assess and use data to improve student outcomes.
  • Experience developing and delivering engaging, hands-on lessons.

Education and/or Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Health Science, Nursing, Allied Health, or a related field.
  • A valid Virginia teaching license with an endorsement in one of the following Practical Nursing, Nursing Aide, Health & Medical Science, or Allied Health (or eligibility to obtain one).
  • Completion of an approved teacher preparation program in Health and Medical Science  Education or a Career Switcher Program.
  • Industry credentials and/or certifications such as CNA, EMT, or a passing score on the Praxis Health Science exam.

Physical Conditions and Nature of Work:

Duties performed typically in school settings include classroom, laboratory, and occasional off-site locations for clinical experiences. Frequent walking, standing, and light lifting (up to 40 pounds) are required. Occasional travel with students for field trips, clinical rotations, or competitions may be necessary. Regular personal and close contact with students to provide classroom management and support for learning is required. Frequent contact with parents, other staff members, and community partners is essential. Occasional interaction with medical professionals may be required.

 

Evaluation: Performance will be evaluated by the building principal based on established division policies and guidelines.
