About the position
The Assistant Principal serves as a key instructional and operational leader within a school, supporting the Principal in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of educational programs and student support services. This role is essential in promoting student achievement and ensuring compliance with educational standards and regulations.
Responsibilities
- Assist the Principal in developing, implementing, promoting, and evaluating programs to meet academic standards.
- Promote student achievement, attendance, and adjustment conducive to school success.
- Implement special education and student support programs, ensuring timely delivery and documentation.
- Coordinate and manage after school and summer programs as assigned.
- Analyze school enrollment data to plan and evaluate the school budget and resource allocations.
- Manage and report on school human and fiscal resources and grants.
- Implement accountability procedures for procurement and distribution of supplies and materials.
- Provide leadership to the School Family Council and facilitate community input on school operations.
- Design and implement programs to improve school-parent-community involvement, including maintaining an active PTA or PTO.
- Supervise and evaluate school staff, implementing strategies for effective performance.
- Plan and coordinate staff development activities.
- Provide leadership through classroom visits and meetings, focusing on new teacher development and retention.
- Develop effective classroom management procedures and behavioral intervention strategies.
- Improve school climate by recommending strategies to reduce violence and suspensions.
- Manage school facilities to ensure a clean and healthy environment.
- Ensure compliance with laws and regulations affecting City Schools, especially regarding special education.
- Resolve employee issues at the school level and conduct employee conferences as needed.
- Implement emergency procedures established by City Schools.
- Maintain accurate student records and databases.
- Maintain active partnerships with business, community, and academic organizations.
- Communicate effectively with the Principal and City Schools administration regarding school issues and achievements.
Requirements
- Master's degree from an accredited college or institution.
- Valid Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) Advanced Professional Certificate with an endorsement as Principal/Supervisor or Administrator I or II.
- Three years of leadership experience in an educational setting or a full-time people management position.
- Experience utilizing data for decision making.
- Experience in an urban education environment preferred.
- Demonstration of effective teaching and learning practices.
- Excellent oral and written communication and presentation skills.
- Excellent interpersonal and human relations skills for effective team building.
- Strong organization, planning, and problem-solving skills.
- Effective conflict and stress management skills.
- Ability to provide instructional supervision and plan staff development programs.
- Ability to manage time and multiple priorities effectively.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with parents, community partners, and students.
- Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
