Job Description – Detention Officer
Job Summary:
- Position: Full-time, non-exempt Detention Officer.
- Pay: Starting at $19.50/hour (with potential increases based on experience). Additional pay for bilingual skills ($0.50/hour) and shift differential for evening shifts ($0.75/hour).
- Reports to: Detention Center Sergeants.
Primary Duties:
- Ensure safe and efficient operation of the Detention Center.
- Enforce policies and procedures, including the inmate handbook.
- Maintain facility security.
- Perform duties professionally, ethically, and impartially.
Intermittent Duties:
- May assume responsibilities of Detention Center Sergeants.
- Perform clerical tasks (e.g., filing, data entry).
- Communicate with medical staff for inmate appointments and ensure compliance with safety protocols.
- Resolve conflicts between inmates and staff or inmates and inmates.
- Work with external agencies for housing needs and warrants.
- Respond to emergencies and follow proper procedures.
- Maintain accurate financial records for inmates.
- Adhere to court orders and document reports.
- Operate assigned equipment and complete daily tasks on time.
Basic Requirements:
- Experience: Preferred but not required.
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent.
- Certifications: Valid Kansas Driver's License, CPR & First Aid, Taser, firearms training may be required.
- Criminal History: Must pass background checks (no felonies or disqualifying misdemeanors).
- Knowledge: Must read, write, and speak English; bilingual skills are helpful.
- Technical Skills: Ability to analyze documentation and write reports.
- Problem-Solving: Ability to assess situations and take corrective action.
- Decision Making: Know when to consult with supervisors.
- Supervision: Reports to Detention Center Shift Sergeant and higher officials.
- Financial Accountability: Proper use of equipment and materials.
- Personal Relations: Effective communication with the public and agencies.
- Working Conditions: High-stress, sometimes extreme environments; occasional outdoor work.
- Physical Requirements: Must lift up to 100 pounds and meet specific vision standards.
