Job Summary:
The 1:1 Student Aid will work directly with an individual student, providing academic, behavioral, and emotional support throughout the school day. The aide will help the student to engage with learning activities, manage behaviors, and promote social skills in the classroom and other school settings. This position requires patience, flexibility, and a strong commitment to creating a positive and inclusive learning environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide direct support to an individual student in the classroom, ensuring they can access and participate in curriculum activities.
  • Assist with academic tasks and reinforce learning by implementing strategies from the student’s individualized education plan (IEP) or behavior plan.
  • Support the student in staying on task, completing assignments, and meeting deadlines.
  • Help the student develop social skills and foster positive relationships with peers.
  • Modify classroom materials and assignments as needed to ensure the student’s success.
  • Monitor and manage behavior, implementing positive behavior interventions as directed by the teacher or special education team.
  • Encourage and promote independent learning and self-regulation.
  • Assist in supervising the student during non-academic times such as lunch, recess, and transitions between classes.
  • Maintain open communication with the classroom teacher, special education staff, and parents/guardians regarding the student’s progress, challenges, and successes.
  • Assist in record-keeping, documentation, and progress reports as required.
  • Follow school policies and guidelines for confidentiality, safety, and behavior management.
  • Attend team meetings, training sessions, and professional development as needed.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent (required); Associate’s degree in Education (preferred).
  • Previous experience working with children or individuals with special needs (preferred).
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively with teachers, students, and parents.
  • Patience, empathy, and a positive attitude.
  • Ability to adapt to the needs of the student and the classroom environment.
  • Ability to handle challenging behaviors and stressful situations in a calm and constructive manner.
  • Familiarity with IEPs and behavior management strategies (preferred).
  • First Aid/CPR certification (preferred but not required).

Working Conditions:

  • This position is typically performed in a school environment.
  • Ability to work a full school day, with occasional after-school or weekend responsibilities if necessary.
  • Physical demands may include assisting with mobility, lifting, and helping with physical activities.
