What are the responsibilities and job description for the Deckhand position at Chatham Area Transit?
SUMMARY
The Deckhand/Mate delivers safe and courteous service to the public. Requests passenger compliance to safety issues with courtesy. Handles lines to moor vessel to wharves, sweeps/washes deck, stands steering, and lockout watches while underway. Moves controls or turns hand-wheels to raise or lower passenger ramps. Simple maintenance of motor and minor repairs to docks/ferryboat. Splices and repairs cable/ropes.
QUALIFICATIONS:
*Regularly required to stand, use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with arms; climb or balance; stoop kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk or hear.
* Required frequent walking or sitting and must be capable of occasionally lifting and/or moving between 50-80 lbs.
*Requires close, distance and color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
*Regularly exposed to outside weather conditions.
*Frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts and moderate noise level.
*Must be able to speak effectively with passengers, the general public and before groups of customers/public in a positive and courteous manner.
Performs related work as assigned.
EDUCATION LEVEL:
*High school diploma or equivalent (GED) required.
*Knowledge of US Coast Guard regulations.
*Must provide a complete and verifiable employment history. Employment history must be verified with all employers listed on the application and must include the past 5 years of employment, when applicable.
*You must sign a background release form.
*Must undergo and pass a pre-employment drug test, DOT physical and a criminal background check
