Building Inspector II - $57,397 - $73,183
Building Inspector III - $60,268 - $76,841
Building Inspector IV - $63,283 - $80,684
Performs intermediate skilled technical work inspecting residential and commercial buildings for compliance with county ordinances and state building codes, maintaining files and records, and performing related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the limited supervision of the Assistant Director of Permits & Inspections.
Essential Functions
- Performs field inspections and reinspections of residential and commercial facilities for compliance with building, plumbing, mechanical, and electrical codes and documents violations and reinspection requirements for code compliance;
- Examines and reviews plans and specifications for construction, plumbing, heating and air conditioning systems, and insulation for compliance with codes and reviews revised plans to ensure that they have been brought in compliance with the codes;
- Enters inspection findings into permitting software for deficiencies and status and shall issue a Certificate of Compliance and consults with appropriate parties to resolve code deficiencies;
- Interprets various codes and provides technical code information to the public, departmental staff, outside architects, engineers, and contractors and conducts code research through documentation and discussions with other agencies and jurisdictions;
- Issues warnings and takes appropriate action;
- Issues stop work orders where construction is not being made in compliance with regulations as to methods and/or materials;
- Testifies in court on code violation cases;
- Investigates complaints received by the public or other county departments;
- Operates and maintains a county vehicle;
- Prepares technical reports and documentation and maintains records and files regarding inspections;
- Attends various meetings and training sessions to stay abreast of professional developments;
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or GED with coursework in building construction trades or a related field and considerable experience in building and construction trades or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Thorough knowledge of all types of building construction materials and methods, and of the stages of construction when possible violations and defects may be easily observed and corrected;
- Thorough knowledge of state and local building ordinances and codes related to building construction;
- Ability to detect poor workmanship, inferior materials, and hazards of fire and collapse;
- Ability to read and interpret plans, specifications, and blueprints accurately and to compare them with construction in process;
- Ability to deal firmly and tactfully in enforcing ordinances and codes;
- Ability to perform mathematical calculations;
- Ability to operate a personal computer including some knowledge of applicable software packages;
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with county officials, department heads, peers, associates, and the general public.
Physical Requirements
This work requires the regular exertion of up to 10 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 25 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 50 pounds of force; work regularly requires speaking or hearing, frequently requires standing, walking, sitting, use of hands and fingers, handling or feeling, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching with hands and arms, and repetitive motions and occasionally requires climbing, balancing, smelling, pushing, pulling and lifting; work has standard vision requirements; work requires vocal communication to express or exchange ideas orally; work requires hearing to perceive information at normal spoken levels; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visually inspecting small defects and/or small parts, using measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts within arms length, operating motor vehicles or equipment, and observing general surroundings and activities; work frequently requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions and occasionally requires exposure to wet, humid conditions (non-weather), working near moving mechanical parts, working in high, precarious places, exposure to fumes or airborne particles and exposure to the risk of electrical shock; work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic).
Special Requirements
Must possess a valid North Carolina driver's license.
Must possess or obtain a Probationary Level I certification in all trades upon hire.

Must possess or obtain a Standard Certificate in Building, Plumbing, Mechanical, and Electrical trades within two years of employment.
