Job Description

The primary purpose of Clinical and Community Health Services is to improve the health of the community by focusing on specific groups that are at high risk for poor health, illness, disability, or premature death. Clinical and Community Health Services exist to provide comprehensive, preventive-oriented services to primarily those who are medically underserved and who may otherwise be unable to receive these services. Services include screening, education, counseling, and direct care, which may be provided in the clinical, home and/or community setting. Laboratory services are provided for clients receiving clinical services through the Clinical and Community Health Services Division. Chatham County Public Health Department’s laboratory services also assist with support for outside community practices such as mental health and referrals from other health care providers. This is one of two temporary, part-time Medical Lab Tech positions. The work schedule will vary, with anticipated training upon hire.
Essential Functions
- Prepares specimens and makes standardized examinations of body fluids and secretions for evidence of pathogenic conditions and for the presence of causative pathogens as necessary through the following testing procedures: wet preps from vaginal smears, urinalysis, pregnancy tests, stat male gram stains, gonorrhea cultures, Hemoglobin, hgbA1c, and Glucose;
- Performs venipuncture or finger stick as necessary for blood collection;
- Prepares all outgoing lab specimens for pickup by the state courier and outside lab courier;
- Records pertinent and accurate client data via written and/or electronic methods;
- Maintains lab equipment in optimal functional condition;
- Assures lab is in compliance with OSHA and CLIA regulations;
- Records daily temperature readings of the laboratory room and incubator;
- Records daily humidity readings of the laboratory room;
- Coordinates activities of the lab (i.e.: mailing samples, ordering and receiving supplies, and sending out equipment for repair and ensuring it has been returned);
- Communicates laboratory updates as needed to staff;
- Participates in continuing education pertinent to the position and as needed to maintain client standards of care;
- Employee is responsible for reviewing Chatham County Public Health Department’s policies pertaining to the laboratory and making recommendations as needed;
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Associate degree in medical technology or completion of a certified laboratory assistant course in medical technology or a comparable course, and one year of medical laboratory experience; or graduation from high school and three years of medical laboratory experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- General knowledge of the variety of laboratory procedures applicable to the area of work and lab equipment, instrumentation, and terminology;
- Skilled in the use of laboratory equipment and in the performance of procedures;
- Ability to collect blood and prepare samples for testing;
- Ability to make accurate observations and written reports of the tests;
- Ability to communicate well with patients and staff to ensure appropriate testing and safety;
- Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions;
- Ability to work with diverse cultures;
- Ability to establish rapport with and relate to the population served as well as with co-workers;
- Basic knowledge of computers, Microsoft Word, and Excel;
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with County officials, department heads, peers, associates, and the general public.
Physical Requirements
This work requires the occasional exertion of up to 10 pounds of force; work regularly requires sitting, speaking, hearing and repetitive motions, frequently requires touching or feeling and occasionally requires standing, walking, climbing, balancing, reaching, pushing, pulling and lifting; work has standard vision requirements; work requires vocal communication to express or exchange ideas orally; work requires hearing to perceive information at normal spoken levels; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data; work has no exposure to environmental conditions; work is generally performed in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).
Special Requirements
Must possess a valid North Carolina driver's license.
PBT/ASCP or MLT/ASCP certification preferred.
Must complete the following annual trainings: Bloodborne Pathogens, HIPAA, Cultural/Equity/Diversity, Bloodborne Pathogens, Respiratory Protection, HIPAA, Public Health Laws, Mandatory Reporting Laws, and Customer Service Training.
Must participate in required programmatic trainings as assigned by the supervisor and in appropriate and approved continuing education and competency to maintain proficient status per NC State Laboratory of Public Health CLIA Contract Program and CPR Certification.
