Performs a variety of basic landscaping and maintenance duties in the care and maintenance of athletic fields, landscaped areas, and buildings in the county’s park facilities. Work involves operating, maintaining, and performing routine repairs to medium to light equipment and using hand tools to landscape park facilities and maintain athletic fields and other related work as assigned. Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the Park Manager. Limited supervision is exercised over seasonal and volunteer staff.

- This position works 2-3 hours per weeknight; morning and night on the weekends.
- This position works 5-7 days per week.
- This position is located on the east side of Chatham County.
- The primary tasks of this position are emptying and picking up trash, cleaning bathrooms, and locking/unlocking parks on the weekends. Other tasks are performed as needed.
- Parks close at 9 pm every night except in December and January when they close at 7 pm.
- Opens and closes park facilities and monitors park activities;
- Enforces park rules and regulations to ensure the safe and proper conduct of patrons;
- Report any safety hazards, maintenance issues, or suspicious activities to park management or relevant authorities;
- Perform routine maintenance tasks, such as cleaning restrooms, emptying trash bins, and maintaining cleanliness in public areas;
- Performs tasks related to maintenance of sidewalks, parking surfaces, play areas, shelters, fields and restrooms;
- Performs service and repairs as needed to maintain park facilities such as minor repairs, interior/exterior building maintenance, and shelters/concession stand;
- Controls and removes fire ant mounts and bee and/or wasp nests with appropriate methods to maintain a safe park environment; controls and removes poison ivy, poison oak, weeds, and overhanging limbs in public areas with appropriate herbicides or mechanical methods as needed/if requested but not required;
- Operates necessary vehicles and tools including pickup truck, string trimmer, mowers, blowers, chainsaws, circular saws, electric drills, gators, tractors, hand saws, pole saws and other gardening and hand tools;
- Inspects, logs, and repairs all playground equipment, buildings, building equipment, fields, fences, structures, courts and maintenance equipment as needed;
- Supports other staff by monitoring, keeping stocked, and delivering all consumables such as gasoline, mix gasoline, toilet paper, paper towels, soap, trash bags, gloves and any other consumables and safety equipment in sufficient quantities;
- Sets up tables and chairs in facilities for upcoming reservations; communicates and posts all reservations for other park staff;
- Updates message boards;
- Drags and paints lines on ball fields as requested;
- Installs and maintains all signage and equipment in county parks;
- Interprets and shares information and safety guidelines regarding wildlife and environment with park visitors and other staff;
- Supports, trains, and advises other park staff and volunteers as needed and
- Other duties as assigned.
- Thorough knowledge of park equipment and ability to perform minor maintenance and repairs to park equipment and structures;
- Thorough knowledge of general safety practices and procedures;
- Thorough knowledge athletic field maintenance;
- Thorough knowledge of herbicide and pesticide application, if applicable dependent on location but not required;
- General knowledge of carpentry concepts and basic plumbing and electrical systems;
- General knowledge of the cleaning methods and sanitation requirements;
- Ability to identify horticultural plant varieties;
- Ability to operate motorized equipment, lawn and garden machinery and hand tools;
- Ability to supervise the work of volunteers, as needed;
- Ability to communicate ideas effectively both orally and in writing and
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with community officials, associates, volunteer groups, program participants, and the general public.
Physical Requirements
This work requires the regular exertion of up to 10 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 25 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 50 pounds of force; work regularly requires standing, walking, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel, reaching with hands and arms and repetitive motions, frequently requires sitting, pushing or pulling and lifting and occasionally requires climbing or balancing and stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using of measuring devices, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work frequently requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions such as heat, humidity, dust, and dirt and occasionally requires working near moving mechanical parts, work occasionally requires exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals and plants and exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment; work is generally in a moderately noisy location.
Special Requirements
Valid driver's license in the State of North Carolina.
