This position will be working with all units of the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office to learn and assist in the daily responsibilities required to meet the needs of Chatham County residents. Specifically, this position will be working with our administrative and command staff across the Sheriff’s Office, Detention Center, and Animal Resource Center, as well as interaction opportunities with our specialty units such as our Boat Ops, Drone Team, and K-9 handlers.   Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the Internal Operations Manager.

Terms and Compensation 
The term of this internship is for Summer 2024. The internship will range from May to August, but exact dates are flexible. The expected schedule will be forty (40) hours per week. The hours each week can be flexible, but they will be completed from our office in Pittsboro. Specific arrangements will be made upon hiring.

 The Sheriff’s Office is located at 295 West Street, Pittsboro, NC 27312 and is open from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm Monday through Friday.

Compensation is $18-20.00 per hour. A computer and any necessary supplies will be provided to complete assignments.

The intern will report directly to the Internal Operations Manager. This position is a temporary/seasonal position. This position will NOT be eligible for benefits, paid leave time (vacation, sick, holiday), nor participation in the retirement system.

 The Chatham County Sheriff’s Office reserves the right to dismiss an intern, at any point, if it is determined the intern is not adequately prepared to perform the functions required of the position.This position could assist with, but is not limited to, the following projects:
  • Supporting the development of a long-range budget plan for the Sheriff’s Office;
  • Supporting the development and maintenance of strategic planning for the Sheriff's Office;
  • Creating new social media accounts/pages for increased community engagement;
  • Assisting in streamlining hiring and onboarding processes to better serve new employees;
  • Developing internal policies to keep up with industry standards and maintain accreditation compliance;
  • Facilitating fundraising programs and events for partners of the Sheriff’s Office; and
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Along with a regular work schedule, interns will be afforded the opportunity to experience other parts of the office as needed. These experiences can range from (but are not limited to) completing a ride along with a patrol deputy, attending a community service event, or shadowing a detention officer. The Sheriff’s Office has a diverse set of units that can provide the intern with several opportunities dependent on their interests.  The preferred candidate will be a graduate student with an interest in local government and/or law enforcement. Must be able to pass a background check and have a valid driver's license in the State of North Carolina.


Physical Requirements
This work requires the frequent exertion of up to 10 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 25 pounds of force; work regularly requires sitting, speaking, hearing, handling or feeling and repetitive motions, frequently requires reaching with hands and arms and occasionally requires standing, walking, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, pushing or pulling and lifting; work has standard vision requirements; work requires vocal communication to express or exchange ideas orally; work requires hearing to perceive information at normal spoken levels; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work has no exposure to environmental conditions; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).

Salary : $37,440 - $41,600
