What will a Career Development Specialist do?
The Career Development Specialist (CDS) will provide coaching and support to job seekers and career advancers. The CDS will be the primary support for individuals as they seek, obtain, and retain successful and self-sufficient employment. The CDS will strive to empower Workforce Development (WFD) Department participants and employees of Goodwill Industries of the Greater Chattanooga Area (GIGCA) to create and attain goals within their career and financial plan, which will help to reach their vocational potential and improve their overall quality of life.
Job functions
- Through words and actions support Chattanooga Goodwill’s Mission, Vision, and Values; furthermore, actions and decisions will align with organizational guiding principles.
- Maintain agency, participant(s) and GIGCA employees(s) confidentiality. Violation of confidentiality may be cause for termination.
- Assists participant and GIGCA employees with their job search by coaching through resume preparation, job interviewing skills, and workplace readiness skills and knowledge.
- Job placement activities including arranging tours of businesses, developing job shadowing experiences, and on-the-job training; locating additional resources needed to help overcome barriers, and making referrals to other agencies, as needed, on behalf of the participants and GIGCA employees.
- Represents GIGCA as an advocate to employers to encourage hiring people with barriers and/or limitations to employment.
- Serves as liaison between the individual participant or employee, the referral source (when applicable), and the employer by providing communication and career support.
- Provides continued support and coaching for success post-employment placement for a minimum of 90 days.
- Ensures that participants’ information is accurately entered into the organization’s database and/or other metric systems as required by partner agencies and department standards.
- Works in partnership with the participants and employee(s) to develop and achieve their individualized career and financial plan.
- Engages with a diverse population of participants and employees in obtaining and maintaining employment that is consistent with the individuals’ vocational goals and action plan.
- Ensure the adherence to CARF standards in all programs and participant services.
- Collaborates, as a One GIGCA team, through open communication with staff in other service areas to ensure the best outcomes and experience for the participant and employee.
- With guidance from departmental leadership, develop and maintain working relationships with local businesses, community resource agencies and vocational training institutions to identify opportunities for job placement and career advancement opportunities for participants and employees.
- With guidance from departmental leadership, advocate with and provide education for local businesses, community resource agencies, and vocational training institutions to develop a network of relationships.
- Ensures contracts, grants, and other agreements requirements are satisfied.
- Collaborates with internal and external case managers, internal staff, and leadership team.
- Develop and maintain a positive working relationship with referral agencies and counselors.
- Provides information about programs and services offered by GIGCA.
- Participate in assistance with goals of the Strategic Plan when appropriate.
- Regular attendance is an essential function.
- Needs to be able to work flexible hours to accommodate hours of operation.
- Short travel is required.
- Perform site visits, as required.
- Perform other duties as assigned
Key knowledge and experience
- A Bachelor’s Degree in training and development, human resources, education, or related field is preferred. Commensurate experience may be considered in lieu of degree. At least six months of working with adults with disabilities is preferred.
- Experience in human resources or business-to-business sales a plus.
- Must be an energetic team player who desires to positively impact the community and create significant change.
- Must have excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office (e.g. Word, Outlook, and Excel)
- Experienced in working with individuals with disabilities or complex barriers to finding suitable employment opportunities, is preferred.
- Must have a good driving record with a valid driver’s license and the ability to travel frequently.
- Work experience in Workforce Development, Human Services, Social Work, or a closely related field is encouraged, but not required.
- Exemplify the vision statement of GIGCA.
- The successful candidate will be mission-driven, participant-focused, and forward thinking.
- Driver license for 3 years.
- Valid Driver’s License and Car Insurance Verification, required.
- Must pass MVR check and maintain a good driving record.
