Summary:

Pharmacy Technicians primarily assist pharmacists in preparing and distributing medications, maintaining the drug inventory, maintaining patient records and facilitating preauthorization of medications. Pharmacy Technicians work only under the supervision of a registered pharmacist. They do not perform duties that can only legally be performed only by a registered pharmacist. Pharmacy Technicians contribute to the effective operation of the Pharmacy Department.

Essential Job Responsibilities:

  1. Assists the Pharmacist in providing medication, drug information and pharmaceutical services to patients, nurses, physicians and other hospital personnel;
  2. Assists in management of the 340B program;
  3. Maintains inventory of supplies and reorders them accordingly;
  4. Manages the cash register and handles cash in responsible and accountable fashion;
  5. Assists in filling prescriptions;
  6. Processes records of medications and supplies dispensed to patients or customers, computes charges and either enters them into the computer or forwards them to Information Systems;
  7. Prepares select reports and MARs;
  8. Receives and stores incoming deliveries of medication and supplies;
  9. Participates in departmental and organizational performance improvement and CQI activities;
  10. Assists the Pharmacists in providing pharmaceutical care for patients ranging in age from newborn to the elderly. Must be able to identify and understand that there are dosage variations between newborn, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients, and know to consult with the Pharmacist if any doubts or questions arise;
  11. Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors;
  12. Maintains the Pharmacy Department in a clean and orderly manner;
  13. Recognizes inappropriate dosing based on available dosage forms for various age groups;
  14. Ensures compliance with USP standards as appropriate, compounding other extemporaneous medications as requested;
  15. Interviews patients to obtain medication histories on admission and enters in “E.H.R.” for review by pharmacist after initial training and demonstration of ability to perform work independently;
  16. Coordinates and completes preauthorization of medications in outpatient arena in coordination with Provider, Nursing, Pharmacists and patients after initial training and demonstration of ability to perform work independently;
  17. Procures and distributes medication orders per pharmacist request and fills medication kits or trays on demand;
  18. Delivers medications to patient areas as needed;
  19. Rotates stock to ensure use before expiration date and identifies and replaces outdated and unusable medications;
  20. Picks up requisitions and returned medications from patient care areas when on delivery rounds;
  21. Performs unit inspections;
  22. Administrative functions including answering the telephone and door;
  23. Borrows and lends medications correctly;
  24. Performs other pharmacy-related duties as requested or required;
  25. Demonstrates ability to calculate figures and amounts relating to dosage calculations when filing various prescriptions ranging from the newborn to the elderly populations;
  26. Demonstrates ability to apply common sense and understanding to carry out instruction furnished in written, oral and diagram form;
  27. Demonstrates knowledge and skill ensuring that pharmaceutical preparations are properly packaged, labeled and stored, and not outdated;
  28. Demonstrates ability to deal with problems involving several variables in particular situations;
  29. Demonstrates organizational skills;
  30. Performs other duties as assigned.

 

Education/Experience/Qualifications: 

Education/Training

  • High School diploma or the equivalent

 Certifications

  • License in the State of Montana as Certified Pharmacy Technician (PTCB) required, or ability to obtain within 18 months or licensure as a Pharmacy Technician In Training.

  

Language Skills: 

Fluent in the English language. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret the most complex documents. Ability to respond effectively to the most sensitive inquiries or complaints.

  • The employee is regularly required to sit and use hands and fingers to provide care to patients and operate computer;
  • Frequently is required to reach with hands and arms;
  • Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds while transporting equipment and supplies;
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and looking into monitors for extended periods of time and ability to adjust focus which permits the employee to perform computer procedures, and to produce and review a wide variety of documents, correspondence, reports and related materials in both electronic and printed form;
  • Clarity of speech and hearing that permits the employee to communicate well with others;
  • Mobility that permits the employee to move about in a variety of building settings; Personal mobility that permits the employee to enter, operate and exit motor vehicles and travel to other clinic sites. 

 

Working Conditions: 

  • Work indoors in climate-controlled environment 95% of the time.
  • OSHA Exposure Category #1 (The normal work routine involves exposure to blood, body fluids, or tissues, but exposure or potential exposure may be required as a condition of employment.)

  

Work Hours: 

  • Full-time, Non-Exempt. Typically, a 40-hour workweek.
