SALARY RANGE

The starting salary range for this position is $70,160 - $87,700 (based on qualifications). With tenure and strong performance in this role an employee may earn up to a maximum of $105,240, annualized.

Introductory Period: New employees holding regular positions must complete an introductory period of twelve months.

JOB POSTING

Overview
The Education Outreach Specialist creates and facilitates educational outreach programs, activities, initiatives and communications that promote positive relations between the Chelan County PUD, the public, and the diverse community the District serves.

Responsibilities

  • Write, develop and deliver lesson plans for hands-on, STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) educational programs and activities for K-12 students and beyond. Connect secondary students with job pathways to inspire interest to careers in hydro and support pipeline of future employees. Provide educators with resource materials.
  • Lead educational tours for public and special interest groups throughout Discovery Center, Rocky Reach Project and other District facilities (Lake Chelan Dam, Rock Island Dam, etc.)
  • Build partnerships to open new pathways for teachers, students, and the public to develop knowledge and understanding of hydropower and the District's hydroelectric projects.
  • Design, plan and execute educational programs, activities, and events.
  • Research, collect, and create presentations on information pertinent to hydro projects, including fish passage, energy transfer, power generation, power plant rehabilitation, etc.
  • Work with Visitor Services Manager to recruit, train, and coordinate volunteers and ambassadors internal and external to the organization to support educational efforts.
  • Create and deliver engaging presentations aimed at sharing the benefits of hydropower, engaging diverse demographics in the mission of the District, and driving visitation to the Discovery Center,
  • Maintain regular and predictable attendance: Perform related duties and responsibilities as required. Comply with District policies. Complete all required training. Maintain a working knowledge and comply with District safety procedures and specific safety requirements of this position, and those in accordance with applicable provisions of the Revised Code of Washington (RCW) and Washington Administrative Code (WAC).
  • As an essential function, drive a motorized vehicle while conducting business on behalf of the District.

Qualifications

Education
Equivalent experience (year for year) may substitute for required education.

  • Bachelor's Degree (B. S., B. A.) in Education or related field from a college or university is required.

Experience

  • 3 years experience in education and/or public outreach is typically required.
  • Prior experience in lesson planning and/or curriculum development strongly preferred.
  • Prior experience in a hydro generating facility is preferred.

Licenses and Certifications

  • Valid Driver's License at hire and WA Driver's License within 30 days of hire required.
  • First Aid Certification within 60 days required.
  • CPR - Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation within 60 days required.

Skills and Abilities
A fully skilled incumbent will have the following knowledge skills & abilities:

  • Working knowledge of NGSS (Next Generation Science Standards)/WA State Science Standards as well as STEAM (Science, Technology, Arts, Engineering, Mathematics) benchmarks by grade level.
  • Demonstrate strong understanding of hydro generation, electricity transfer, fish passage, public power concepts, career pathways, and District values.
  • Dynamic and skilled public speaker with ability to communicate detailed technical information to easily understandable presentations for people of all ages and listen and respond to inquiries.
  • Ability to connect respectfully with diverse demographics.
  • Ability to think critically and creatively to design, develop and create lesson plans featuring hands-on, critical thinking activities for students of all ages and abilities.
  • Strong customer service, interpersonal, and communication skills.
  • Motivated self-starter with ability to multitask effectively.
  • Working knowledge of District Safety procedures, WACs and RCWs applicable to this position.
  • To perform this job successfully, an individual is required to have knowledge of PeopleSoft Time Entry/HRIS; Microsoft Outlook; Microsoft Excel; Microsoft Word; Microsoft PowerPoint and General Office Equipment.
  • Must be proficient in reading, writing and speaking English.
  • This position communicates with the public more than 20% of the time. fluency in English and Spanish is preferred.
