Salary range: RC03 Step 4 at $27.45 per hour to Step 9 at $34.71 per hour

The position includes a state retirement system, with a deferred comp program available and a tool allowance stipend. Health insurance package includes Medical, Dental, Vision and county contributions to a personal health savings account. Typical work schedule is four 10-hour days during the summer and five 8-hour days in the winter. Includes 10 holidays and 2 or 3 floating personal holidays (dependent on hire date).

SUMMARY

Service and maintain various types and make of vehicles and equipment. Examines and replaces defective tires and repairs damaged tires either in house or out in the field. Helps maintain tire and lubricant inventories with the help of Assistant Shop Foreman and Equipment Parts Specialist. Preventive maintenance inspection of all vehicles for brake and clutch tolerances to make sure we stay within specifications. Report any maintenance issues to Assistant Shop Foreman so the repairs can be scheduled.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Include the following, other duties may be assigned;

Making sure that all moving parts are lubricated if needed.

Inject grease into units, such as spring shackles, universal joints and steering knuckles, using hand-or compressed air-powered grease guns.

Inspecting fluid levels of steering gear boxes, power steering reservoirs, transmissions, differentials, rear axle housings, hydraulic tanks and transfer cases.

Checking tire air pressure an adding air if needed, adding coolant to radiators, testing batteries, replacing oil, transmission and cab filters.

Draining oil and refilling crankcase, differential, transmission and transfer cases with the right amount of new lubricant.

Reading and understanding service manuals for all vehicles and equipment to determine proper volumes and types of lubricants.

Safe and efficient lifting of vehicles with a hydraulic jack and unbolting wheels with a manual or power lug wrench.

Safe operation of tire machines, and tools for removing and installing tires on wheels.

Identify and inflate tires for the size, ply and vehicle weight.

Maintain tire and lubricant inventory.

Visually and tactually examining tire to determine if defect resulted from faulty construction or curing.

Measuring tread depth to determine remaining tire life.

Locating punctures in tubeless tire by visual inspection or by spraying soap solution on tire and observing air bubbles emerging from puncture.

Sealing punctures in tubeless tire by inserting adhesive material and expanding rubber plug into puncture.

Removing inner tube from tire and inspects tire casing for defects, such as holes and tears.

Gluing boots (tire patches) over ruptures in tire casing.

Reassembling tire onto wheel, and placing wheel on balancing machine to determine counterweights required to balance wheel.

Hammering required counterweights onto rim of wheel.

Safe removal, breakdown and replacement of backhoe and loader tires.

Preparation of rims and brake drums for reassembly by scraping, grinding, or sandblasting.

Work alongside the skilled technicians to learn to preform repairs on all types of vehicles and equipment.

Cleaning machines, sweeping floors, clean restroom, and transporting stock.

Communicate with Assistant Shop Foreman and Equipment Parts Specialist as to needs for tires, lubricants, and tools.

Take direction from Assistant Shop Foreman and the Fleet Services Manager/Shop Foreman.

This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or general education degree (GED); one (1) year experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and recognize similarities and differences between words and between series of numbers. Ability to print and speak simple sentences.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add and subtract two-digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

A valid Washington State Driver's License, First Aid/CPR/AED, Flagger card and Fork Lift card.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts and outside weather conditions. The employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles. The employee is occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals and risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.

Must supply their own hand tools.
