Lead Nurse Responsibilities:
The lead nurse will serve as a model for the health staff. In addition to a full school nursing load, the lead nurse will:
- Serve as point person for nursing staff questions
- Manage school health programs in accordance with the standards of professional practice for school nurses, Federal and State law, the rules and regulations of the Department of Public Health and the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, the Chelsea School Department and the City of Chelsea.
- Provide nursing leadership and health program evaluation.
- Collaborate with the Administrative Health Manager to develop procedures and coordinate data collection and provide reports and data analysis as required/requested.
- Represent the school department in school health related matters including the provision of advice regarding school and occupational safety and emergency response and preparedness
- Coordinate with the Administrative Health Manager to develop needs assessment plans and implement programs and provide for a continuous quality assurance and evaluation.
- Provide training for school health and District staff, including but not limited to CPR/First Aid, Epi Pen and Narcan Administration yearly updates, and AED in-service and training.
- Coordinate the clinical aspects of a comprehensive school health program collaborating with school physical education and student support services. Works with school physician and the City’s Board of Health in relation to school health and communicable disease surveillance.

- Create SNAP templates
- Develop policies, procedures and protocols for emergency care, including but not limited to, first aid, diagnosis and treatment, student and parent counseling, medication administration, follow-up, and documentation and record keeping.
- Collaborate with Administrative Health Manager to manage any communicable disease outbreaks/concerns in cooperation with MA DPH and the City’s Board of Health/Public Health Nurse.
- Collaborate with school administrators, school health program staff, and other school staff in the effective implementation of school wellness policy, head injury policy, and medical emergency response plans.
- Collaborate with community health providers and other community organizations or coalitions addressing health issues of children and adolescents. Coordinates with external agencies providing additional programs such as dental and vision.
- Participate in IEP/504 meetings to assure the delivery of services for medically fragile students as needed.
- Coordinate/lead professional development activities for school health program staff, provides leadership for and facilitates monthly School Nurse Professional Leadership Community (PLC) meetings,
- Participate in relevant state and regional meetings such as School Nurse Leader quarterly meetings.
- Work in cooperation with school-based health centers.
- Collaborate with Administrative Health Manager to develop procedures to ensure accurate recordkeeping, data collection, and reporting.
- Responsibilities will include time outside of regular work day to meet up to two times per month with administrative health manager
Qualifications: The ideal candidate will have 3 or more years of nursing experience. Candidate has demonstrated exemplary nursing and instructional leadership skills in the relevant content area. Valid license to practice as a Registered Nurse in Massachusetts, a MA DESE licensure as a school nurse. At minimum, DESE licensure must be in progress. Bilingual proficiency and medical delegation certification preferred.

Compensation: Lane change or equivalent (if at the Master's Lane it will be 5%)
