Chemonics’ East and Southern Africa (ESAF) Regional Business Unit seeks a Product Support Specialist (Technical Communications Specialist) for USAID's Famine Early Warning Systems Network (FEWS NET) 7 Pillar 3 . The Product Support Specialist for Pillar 3 will support the project’s Livelihoods Quality Assurance Advisor in the production and dissemination of reports and decision-support products. The Product Support Specialist will work both independently and within the broader FEWS NET team to ensure all products are compliant with Section 508 and FEWS NET’s Branding and Marking Plan, lead the preparation of training and guidance materials, and support project communications.

Since its establishment in 1985, the Famine Early Warning Systems Network (FEWS NET) project aims to sustainably prevent food insecurity and famine across the globe by delivering to the U.S. Government and partners early warning on the location, causes, and magnitude of current and future food insecurity; improving the quality and timeliness of information and analysis useful for achieving sustainable food security; and strengthening innovative local, national, regional, and international capabilities to understand and appropriately address current, recurrent, and likely future food insecurity. Chemonics has been implementing FEWS NET since 2000, beginning its seventh phase (FEWS NET 7) in 2019.

FEWS NET’s analysis is based on a Livelihoods Framework using the Household Economy Approach. Chemonics has been implementing the Pillar 3 Task Order since November 2022. Under the Pillar 3 contract, Chemonics updates livelihood zone baseline profiles and descriptions for various countries. In the third and final year of the contract, Pillar 3 will be working in Guatemala and Zimbabwe.

Responsibilities :

  • In consultation with the COP and the LQAA, lead the product development cycle of custom livelihood zone-specific products and inputs in line with program strategy and compliance requirements;
  • Coordinate overall project communications;
  • Contribute to the preparation of consistent, quality livelihoods reports and other products;
  • Publish reports and other deliverables per FEWS NET branding and marking
  • Review reports, livelihood zone products, deliverables and other communications

products as needed ensuring style consistency, adherence to FEWS NET branding and marking requirements and Section 508 compliance;

  • With input from the COP and LQAA, support the preparation of training and guidance materials;
  • Manage communications and dissemination of reports and data submission activities;
  • Regularly liaise and collaborate across all FEWS NET programs to support and inform livelihood zone products, provide feedback on areas of overlapping interest, establish common naming conventions for FEWS NET 7 Pillar 3 products, support data submission to the FEWS NET Learning and Data Hub (Hub), etc.
  • Liaise with the Hub to ensure submission of all household interviews and HEA baseline data sets, annual and quarterly reports, workplans and KB products;
  • Ensure timely uploading of deliverables to the Development Experience Clearinghouse (DEC) and the Development Data Library (DDL) on an ongoing basis;
  • Supervise and coordinate with editorial partners and consultants for profile writing and product development;
  • Support map production;
  • Lead the documentation of processes and approaches;
  • Manage the product development process;
  • Collaborate with COP and LQAA to develop training materials to be presented on the FEWS NET exchange;
  • Development of informational blogs with the Chemonics communications department and / or the Hub;
  • Undertake other duties as assigned by the COP.
  • Requirements :

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience.
  • Minimum 3 years of relevant experience.
  • Relevant experience in food security, livelihoods, communications, and knowledge management.
  • Previous experience managing or coordinating a team or initiative preferred.
  • Excellent communication skills and professional demeanor with demonstrated ability and comfort working with a range of diverse technical and administrative professionals across multiple geographies.
  • Experience living and working in a developing country context is preferred.
  • Solid knowledge of Microsoft Windows systems and Office suite, including Excel, and an interest in learning additional computer skills.
  • Experience with Section 508 remediation preferred.
  • Proactive, detail-oriented, and well-organized in delivering professional responsibilities and organizational commitments on time and of high quality.
  • Capacity to proactively and assertively address issues and changing circumstances adeptly, both independently and with the support of other team members.
  • Experience working with graphic design and data processing software (Publisher, Indesign, ArcGIS, Adobe suite) preferred;
  • Fluency in English required; French and / or Spanish language skills desirable
