LABORER (TUESDAY - SATURDAY):
The LABORER (TUESDAY - SATURDAY) position exists in the Chenango County Department of Public Works. Employees in this class perform a variety of routine manual tasks many of which require physical endurance and a willingness to perform arduous work. The work involves the performance of road, bridge, water and sewer line maintenance and construction activities and may involve the performance of recycling and garbage transfer functions. Incumbents perform their duties in inclement weather conditions and in a variety of hot and cold temperatures, and are required to work additional hours when needed to assist with snow and ice removal activities or to perform emergency storm damage cleanup activities, or emergency water or sewer repair activities. This work normally involves operating the wing of a snow plow, operating small plows or a skid loader to move snow and ice, shoveling paths, walkways and bridges, cutting and removing trees from roadways, removing rocks, dirt and debris from roads, culverts and sluices, and other related activities, or repairing broken water or sewer lines. Duties of incumbents in this job title will vary by municipality. County employees in this job title may be assigned to perform a variety of manual tasks at the County’s transfer stations or the County Landfill when needed; and Village employees in this job title perform sidewalk replacement activities and significantly more work on water and sewer pipelines. Work is performed under general supervision in accordance with well-defined policies and procedures. Supervision over the work of others is not a requirement of employees in this class. Does related work as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
None are required.
Special Requirements:
1. At time of appointment and continuing throughout employment incumbents assigned to transfer stations or the landfill will be required to obtain the Hepatitis B immunization series and a tetanus shot and keep these immunizations up to date.
2. At time of appointment incumbents who are under 18 years of age will be required to provide an appropriate employment certificate or permit (“working papers”) issued in accordance with regulations promulgated by the New York State Department of Labor.
Note 1: Incumbents under age 18 will be restricted from performing functions that are prohibited by State or Federal child labor regulations.
Note 2: If an incumbent possesses a Commercial Drivers’ License (CDL) they will be required to undergo pre-employment drug testing and random drug and alcohol testing so that in the course of their employment they may be assigned to perform safety sensitive functions without delay.
Pay Rate:
The position has a 40 hour work week and the 2024 pay rate is $18.72 per hour.
