What are the responsibilities and job description for the Paralegal position at Chenango County?
PARALEGAL - This is a para-professional position in the Legal Unit of the Chenango County Department of Social Services involving responsibility for assisting in a wide variety of legal duties including research, preparation of legal documents and preparations for hearings and trials. An employee in this class performs a variety of tasks that involve the application of limited legal procedures and techniques but do not require the skills of an attorney. Assists in the preparation of legal documents such as petitions, briefs and opinions. Prepares and revises contracts and compiles necessary information and documentation for new contracts. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Social Services Attorneys with leeway allowed for the exercise of independent judgment in carrying out the duties of the position. Supervision may be exercised over subordinate clerical and/or Fraud staff in the department. Some travel may be required to fulfill the duties of the position. Does related work as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
EITHER:
(A) Possession of a Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Paralegal Studies or a closely related field; OR
(B) Possession of an Associate’s Degree or higher in Paralegal Studies or a closely related field and two (2) years of experience as a paralegal or legal secretary; OR
(C) An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A) and (B) above.
Note: Your degree must have been awarded by a college or university accredited by a regional, national, or specialized agency recognized as an accrediting agency by the U.S. Department of Education/U.S. Secretary of Education. If your degree was awarded by an educational institution outside the United States and its territories, you must provide independent verification of equivalency. Special Requirement: At time of appointment and continuing throughout employment, a candidate/incumbent must possess a valid New York State Driver’s License, a reliable vehicle, and a driving record acceptable to the County’s insurance carrier.

In accordance with Internal Revenue Code §6103 candidates who are actively being considered for employment in this title may be required to consent to all pre-employment screening requirements established by IRS Publication 1075 §5.1.1 to determine suitability for employment.
A civil service examination will be required for permanent appointment at a later date. Position status: Competitive.
