PUBLIC DEFENDER - Chenango County's Public Defender's Office has an opening for a PUBLIC DEFENDER. This position is responsible for administering the Public Defender’s Office and for representing without charge at the request of the defendant, or by order of the court with the consent of the defendant, each indigent defendant charged with a crime and respondents in family and surrogate court proceedings. The work involves responsibility for directing the investigation, preparation and counsel of defendants at every stage of the proceedings. Supervision is exercised over the work of professional and clerical subordinates. The Public Defender is appointed by the Board of Supervisors for a term of office that runs concurrent with the term of the Board making the appointment. The incumbent does related work as required.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Possession of a license to practice law in the State of New York and three years of experience in practicing law.

Special Requirements:
1. As set forth in County of Chenango Local Law No. 1 of 1974 Chenango County residency is a requirement for appointment to this position.
2. At time of appointment and continuing throughout employment, a candidate/incumbent must possess a valid New York State Driver’s License, a reliable vehicle, and a driving record acceptable to the County’s insurance carrier.

Salary is commensurate with experience: $130,000 - $150,000. Full benefits package included.
