What are the responsibilities and job description for the Social Welfare Examiner - Continuous Recruitment (HELP Program) position at Chenango County?
The Chenango County Department of Social Services has an immediate opening for a Social Welfare Examiner. Duties involve working directly with applicants and clients to determine their eligibility for various social service programs. To qualify candidates must have completed at least 60 credit hours in any field of study; OR have a HS diploma or GED and two years of full-time paid experience or its’ part-time equivalent in examining, investigating, or evaluating claims for assistance, veterans or unemployment benefits, insurance, or a similar program.
Positions start at $20.43 per hour (2024 hire rate) and include a full benefits package.
NO civil service examination required for permanent appointment!
Position status: Non-Competitive for the duration of the NY HELPS Program - Local.

Qualified Candidates MUST meet the following MINIMUM QUALIFCIATIONS: Either:
(A) Successful completion of at least 60 semester credit hours; OR
(B) Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma AND two years of full-time paid experience or its’ part-time equivalent in examining, investigating, or evaluating claims for assistance, veterans or unemployment benefits, insurance, or a similar program operating under established criteria for eligibility; OR
(C) An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A) and (B) above.
Note: Your degree must have been awarded by a college or university accredited by a regional, national, or specialized agency recognized as an accrediting agency by the U.S. Department of Education/U.S. Secretary of Education. If your degree was awarded by an educational institution outside the United States and its territories, you must provide independent verification of equivalency. Special Requirement: At time of appointment and continuing throughout employment, a candidate/incumbent must possess a valid New York State Driver’s License, a reliable vehicle, and a driving record acceptable to the County’s insurance carrier.
