What is sponsor?
A sponsor is a person who has opened up their home and heart to caring for an individual with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities.
Why are Sponsors needed?
Sponsors are needed to create a sense of belonging and hope for individuals with developmental disabilities. Without sponsors, majority of our individuals would be sent to live in a group or worse, mental institutions. Sponsors provide constant care by allowing the individual to live in their home and become a member of their family.
What it takes to be a sponsor?
A caring heart and space for an additional member to be added to your family and your home. A sponsor job would be to integrate the individual into your family creating a sense of belonging and hope. Provide 24 hour supervision and care needs depending on the individual.

Minimal Requirements:
- Must be 18 years of age
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Virginia Resident provide documents regarding residency to include but not limited to renter’s/homeowner’s insurance, certificate of occupancy, floor plans, etc.
- Complete a background check and criminal history check
- Obtain Tuberculosis and Hepatitis B evaluation for each family member.
- 1 years of professional experience providing services to clients with developmental and or intellectual disabilities.
- Comply with Regulations and VA State Codes for sponsored residential programs.
- Adhere, complete, and compliant with on-site or off-site training including but not limited to First Aid/CPR, Non-violent crisis, medication administration training, etc.
- Provide at least three (3) professional references attesting to experience
- Reliable transportation
