TITLE: LABORATORY TECHNICIAN
DEPARTMENT: DRUG TESTING LAB GRADE: Part-Time
POSITION SUMMARY
** _THE CURRENT OPEN POSITION IS TO CONDUCT MALE OBSERVATIONS AND COLLECTIONS. _

This position is responsible for insuring the integrity of specimens collected for urine drug screens by observing collection, tracking and maintaining control of specimens and on weekends performing laboratory analysis on the analyzer for the Drug Screening Laboratory, which is a 7-day per week laboratory used for court ordered drug screens. Work involves check-in of clients reporting for testing, assisting with necessary paperwork, collecting payments, observing sample collection, and will require operator to be certified for analyzer operation. Requires early morning hours and weekend work, with one weekend off per month. Schedule ranges from 20 – 29 hours per week, with varying schedules. Work is performed under the general supervision of the
Laboratory Manager.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Observes and monitors urine specimen collection; the observer is required to be the same gender as the donor.
Collects, prepares and performs laboratory analysis of urine specimens
Reviews, records and reports test results
Performs and records preventative maintenance and instrument checks
Follows safety policies and procedures
Maintains sample chain of custody
Collects and disposes of specimens for diagnostic testing
Performs laboratory-related clerical duties including filing, record keeping, entering data into computer database, and distributing test results to appropriate requesting parties
Checks standard laboratory supplies inventory
Cleans laboratory working surfaces and disposes of water in accordance with the department’s waste management plan
Performs other duties as requested.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience
High school diploma or GED
Minimum two years’ work experience in medical, legal, law enforcement or related field
Any combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge and skills is acceptable.
Certificates, Licenses and Registrations
Certificate of Training may be required for analyzer, and can be attained after employment.

Skill in multi-tasking
Must be detail-oriented and possess the ability to work in a fast-paced environment with limited supervision
Ability to work with difficult people.
Ability to maintain confidentiality in conducting lab business
Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, orally and in writing
Education and Experience
B.S. in Criminal Justice or related field
Five years’ experience in law enforcement related field
Certificates, Licenses and Registrations
Operator certificate on a drug screening analyzer.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of state laws, regulations, policies and procedures applicable to drug testing
