Description: This position requires positive interface with the public serving as an ambassador of the County. The attendant shall confirm that all customers are residents of Cherokee County and provide respectful service to the public. Duties involve checking for possession of a valid access card or Cherokee County Driver License, keeping areas around dumpsters clean, picking up any loose debris, stacking cardboard, keeping recycling trailers orderly, and other duties as required. The job requires light to medium lifting on a regular basis. The site is open regardless of weather conditions so applicant should be able to get to work in any kind of weather, including in snow.
Insure that Hazardous Wastes, liquids, and other prohibited items identified in the SWO are not deposited anywhere at the Convenience Centers when they are present on site and to comply with the requirements of the NC DENR Solid Waste Division.
The attendant shall reject loads containing Prohibited Wastes and direct customers to the County Landfill or Hazardous Waste disposal contractors as appropriate.
Collect license tag and personal identification information on customers who have violated the Solid Waste Ordinance (SWO) and assist in the enforcement of the SWO.
Review camera security footage and provide depositions or testimony if needed for the prosecution of violations of the SWO.
Identify the presence and source vehicle and tag number (if possible) of prohibited wastes which were deposited in waste collection areas when the Convenience Center was open and unattended; to assist in the enforcement of the SWO.
Monitor the levels of recyclables collected in the various containers at the Convenience Centers and call in to the Landfill for container collection at the appropriate time; to insure the most efficient use of County resources. Prevent the contamination of recycling streams.
Monitor and insure that customers only leave approved items in the Swap Shop areas of the Convenience Center.
Perform minor maintenance and housekeeping tasks on the Convenience Center buildings, fences, and grounds and maintain a clean and safe environment for the public and employees.
Identify and take action to abate safety hazards on the Convenience Center property and in the entrance and egress driveways.
Minimum Training and Experience: Graduation from high school or general equivalency degree. No experience needed although prior work experience dealing with the public is helpful.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Attendants must be able to read, write legibly, file alphabetically, follow instructions, interact professionally with the general public, work without supervision, perform light and medium lifting regularly, climb step ladders, take and transmit digital photographs, and follow the guidelines established by Cherokee County and the Solid Waste Department Management.
