Description of Work:
This position is responsible for providing information, serving customers, maintaining files, data entry, recording of legal records and receiving and posting payment for services provided.
ESSENTIAL TASKS:
Accepts and reviews legal documents; indexes in accordance with state and local procedures.
Greets and assists general and professional public; advises and assists with legal document requirements: provides assistance and/or training on use of equipment.
Processes legal documents and insures recording in accordance with requirements. Examples of such documents include marriage, birth and death records, deeds, deeds of trust, ordinances, etc.
Issues licenses and provides copies of legal documents as requested.
Assists attorneys in locating documents as needed
Answers phones and routes calls, answers questions, and takes messages.
Performs routine office tasks such as typing, filing, faxing, phoning, and copying.
Attends staff meetings to exchange information; attends in-service training and technical or professional classes, seminars, or conferences to improve technical or professional skills.

Performs related duties as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Thorough knowledge of standard office procedures, software and equipment.
Ability to perform semi-skilled work involving rules/systems with occasional problem solving.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and the public as well as members of other departments.
Considerable knowledge of the General Statutes of the State of North Carolina as they pertain to the Register of Deeds office.
Considerable knowledge of the nature and content of a variety of documents processed in the Register of Deeds office.
Ability to add, subtract and calculate ratios and percentages and prepare reports from gathered information.
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
Requires high school graduation, GED and formal training, special courses, or specialized advanced training equivalent to satisfactory completion of one year of college education or specialized advanced training in office technology, computer information systems, or a closely related field. Preference given to applicants with prior experience in filing and recording of deeds and other instruments recorded by the Register of Deeds.
