Primary Function
Provides clinical assessments and treatment services for EBCI and IHS-eligible patients with mental health and substance abuse disorders. Conducts comprehensive clinical assessments, treatment planning, and individual, group, and family therapy. Also provides referral facilitation, crisis intervention, consultation, and community-based services as assigned. Primarily serves adults, with occasional service for children and families.


Job Description

  • Offer services including comprehensive clinical assessments, treatment planning, individual, group, and family therapy, and case management.
  • Lead group therapy sessions tailored to client needs, such as SAT, SAIOP, MAT Groups, DBT, CBT, Trauma, and Grief Groups.
  • Collaborate with the treatment team to conduct assessments, identify patient needs, and support resources.
  • Coordinate with medical staff and other agencies to facilitate patient care, discharge, and follow-up.
  • Provide patient and family counseling and develop discharge and follow-up plans.
  • Oversee treatment plan development, implementation, and case management referrals.
  • Participate in clinical team meetings to adjust treatment plans based on patient data.
  • Conduct individual and family therapy sessions for mental health and substance use issues.
  • Offer walk-in services, triage clients, and determine priority needs.
  • Use ASAM criteria to refer clients to the appropriate level of care for substance use services.
  • Maintain familiarity with relevant policies and procedures across various locations, such as Analenisgi Inpatient and Outpatient, Primary Care, and other clinics.
  • Participate in Cherokee Tribal Drug Court Team, if applicable, and provide case updates.
  • Assist with observed urine drug screens per Analenisgi policies.
  • Attend supervision sessions based on licensure and certifications.
  • Collaborate with agencies like Tribal Court, Probation, Drug Court, and Family Safety Program as advocates for clients.
  • Adhere to privacy and confidentiality policies for all patient records and clinical information.
  • Attend clinical staffing to discuss patient data and update treatment plans.
  • Develop individual treatment plans that align with diagnosis and agency guidelines.
  • Support accreditation efforts with the Joint Commission of Health Care Organizations.
  • Attend department meetings, contribute to program improvement, and recommend changes when needed.
  • Facilitate referrals to higher levels of care and establish partnerships with community agencies.
  • Maintain accurate records of treatment and clinically significant events per CIHA policies.
  • Provide consultation services to external contacts involved in patient care, including schools, courts, hospitals, and social services agencies.
  • Engage in community planning and program implementation.
  • Meet productivity standards and participate in ongoing training for continuing education.
  • Participate in on-call rotation and provide care in other CIHA departments as needed.
  • Achieve a 55% productivity standard for billable/reimbursable services.
  • Assist in the Beauty for Ashes program as assigned.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education/Experience/Minimum Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Social Work, Psychology, Marriage & Family Therapy, or Counseling required, from an accredited university recognized by NC licensing agencies.
  • NC licensure as LCSW, LPP, LCMHC, or LMFT; provisional or associate licenses may be accepted.
  • Competence in Substance Use treatment via licensure/certification or relevant experience; some positions may require certification by the NC Addictions Specialist Professional Practice Board.
  • Must secure and maintain medical credentialing upon hire.
  • Three years of diagnostic, therapeutic experience preferred.
  • Experience working with Native Americans preferred.
  • Valid driver’s license required.

Job Knowledge

  • Expertise in individual, group, and family therapy, with a focus on crisis intervention.
  • Ability to assess situations for potential lethality and respond appropriately.
  • Proficiency in computerized treatment systems, electronic medical records, and manual recordkeeping.
  • Knowledge of behavioral health, psychosocial issues, and substance use treatment.
  • Familiarity with community resources and regulatory guidelines.
  • Skills in establishing rapport, assessing psychological needs, and providing culturally sensitive care.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work effectively with clients, families, and interdisciplinary teams.

Complexity of Duties
Responsible for maximizing resources to address community behavioral health and substance use needs, applying clinical judgment and problem-solving skills to provide effective service.

Supervision Received
Works under the guidance of the Adult Services Supervisor. Must work independently within licensing regulations, with effective communication to align with organizational goals.

Responsibility for Accuracy
Accuracy is crucial for patient outcomes, community relations, and resource allocation. Responsible for adhering to policy and maintaining precise data.

Contact with Others
Regular interaction with coworkers, hospital staff, patients, and community agencies, requiring professional conduct and confidentiality.

Confidential Data
Access to sensitive patient information, protected by HIPAA and CIHA policies. Strict confidentiality is mandatory, with consequences for violations.


Mental/Visual/Physical Environment
Mentally and emotionally demanding role requiring close concentration and attention to detail. Physical requirements include mobility, reaching, bending, and the ability to lift up to 30 lbs.

Work Environment
Primarily in a clinical setting with moderate risks of exposure to infectious materials, radiation, and chemicals. Adherence to OSHA guidelines is essential. Some travel and occasional overnight trips for training may be required.

Emergency Privileges
Authorized to take all necessary actions in emergencies to protect patient life and safety, regardless of clinical privileges.
