Primary Function

The purpose of this position is to assist the Director of Nursing in assessing resident care needs and implementing appropriate action. Implements nursing policies and procedures. Supervises staffing for the nursing department and supervises the quality of nursing care provided to residents.

 

Job Description 

  • Directs, evaluates and supervises all resident care and initiates corrective action.
  • Makes daily resident rounds and reports status of nursing care to the Administrator and the Director of Nursing.
  • Collects resident pre-admission and/or admission information and assists the Director of Nursing to determine appropriate level of care.
  • Supervises the implementation of nursing rehabilitation and restorative program.
  • Participates in review of Quality Indicator reports and implementation of corrective actions to improve resident care.
  • Assists with analysis of incident and accident investigation reports to determine cause(s) and implements corrective action(s), when appropriate.
  • Reviews residents admitted and compares physician orders with each resident's plan of care to assure appropriate implementation of physician's plan of care.
  • Implements Quality Assessment and Assurance Program, for the nursing department, in cooperation with the Quality Assurance Coordinator.
  • Analyzes quality assurance reports and presents to the Quality Assessment and Assurance Committee with request for recommendations.
  • Performs all RN duties as needed.
  • Participates in on call duty as needed.
  • Finds staff when there are call outs for Daily Assignment Sheets.
  • Supervises the Infection Control Program by reviewing infection control reports from charge nurses, analyzing data and presenting to Infection Control Committee with request for recommendations.
  • Participates in interdisciplinary team and rehabilitation conference meetings.
  • Maintains confidentiality of resident and facility information.
  • Identifies safety hazards and initiates corrective action as necessary.
  • Assesses resident equipment and supply needs, and makes recommendations to the Director of Nursing.
  • Observes Resident's Bill of Rights policies at all times.
  • Completes Admission/Readmission orders & assessments
  • Covid Testing for staff & Residents
  • Complete reports & assignments accurately and adhere to established time schedules. 
  • Monitor and track Covid immunizations for residents and staff.
  • Monitor and track yearly PPD for staff.
  • Maintain exposure log for facility.
  • Observe infection control procedures related to nursing services.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Education/Experience/Minimum Qualifications

  • Associate’s Degree in Nursing from an accredited School of Nursing required. 
  • Bachelor degree in Nursing preferred. 
  • An active unrestricted NC RN license is required; an active unrestricted RN multi-state license from a state that participates in the enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact will be accepted in lieu of an active NC RN license.
  • One year of general RN experience required. 
  • One year of RN supervisory experience required. 
  • Medical experience in a nursing home setting preferred.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) preferred; can be attained within 6 months of date of hire.
  • Valid North Carolina driver’s license required.
  • 9-12 months would be necessary to become proficient in most phases of this position.

 

Job Knowledge

  • Must have knowledge of the policies, procedures, and guidelines of the CIHA, standard nursing practices, applicable OSHA mandates, and related regulatory controls. 
  • Ability to understand and comply with applicable Federal, State and local regulations and requirements.
  • Knowledge regarding nursing home health care and/or public health nursing with expertise in clinical/coverage issues required. 
  • Must have an understanding of EBCI culture, life styles and risk factors.
  • Knowledge of principles, practices, techniques, and theories of professional nursing in order to plan and provide nursing care to meet the physical, emotional, spiritual, and socio-cultural needs of patients of all ages; specifically, Adult (21-64 years), and Elderly (65- years).
  • Knowledge of the nursing process and its application to clinical practice.
  • Knowledge of the biological aspects of the disease process and illness in order to recognize complications.
  • Knowledge of medications and dosages in order to recognize desired effects, side effects, and complications of their use.
  • Knowledge and ability to analyze the results of various medical procedures and translate into appropriate nursing interventions.
  • Knowledge and ability to independently plan, manage, and organize work in order to meet priorities, accomplish work within established time frames and work in stressful situations.
  • Knowledge of the culture and medical health profile of the patient population.
  • Knowledge of processes and procedures for establishing, revising, continually monitoring, and evaluating standards for the practice of nursing.

 

Complexity of Duties

Must be able to make independent decisions about patient needs while following well defined policies, procedures, and established guidelines. Requires the ability to plan, coordinate activities, solve problems, assess situations, and develop appropriate resident case management. Must use judgment and initiative to maintain accuracy of work. Must be resourceful when responding to changing circumstances. Requires the ability to recognize unusual or difficult nursing care problems and utilize problem-solving skills to suggest constructive changes.

 

Supervision Received

Works under the direct supervision of the Director of Nursing, reporting unusual circumstances or problems. Tsali Care Center Director of Nursing works in collaboration with CIHA Director of nursing to address personnel issues as they arise.

 

Supervisory Responsibilities

At times, the incumbent of this position may be requested to act as the Tsali Care Center DON on a prn basis. Supervises the work of RN’s, LPN’s and CNA’s (approximately 35).

 

Responsibility for Accuracy

Requires a high degree of accuracy in reporting health abnormalities to the patient's primary RN, and in the documentation of services provided. Undetected errors could have minimal or life threatening results. Government regulations, compliance with strict resident guidelines and adherence to all applicable Federal, State and Tribal rules and regulations must be strictly adhered to.

 

Contact with Others

Has frequent contact with residents, families, coworkers and other health care professionals where tact, courtesy, and diplomacy are required to maintain positive relationships. Requires good communication skills, both written and oral. Requires sensitivity to others dealing with residents and their families who may be under stress while dealing with issues of disease, old age, and poor health. Purpose of contacts is to exchange information, offer instruction, and work together to meet residents' goals.

 

Confidential Data

The incumbent has access to highly confidential patient medical and personal information. The Privacy Act of 1974 mandates that the incumbent shall maintain complete confidentiality of all administrative, medical, and all other pertinent information that comes to his/her attention or knowledge. The Act carries both civil and criminal penalties for unlawful disclosure of records. Violations of such confidentiality shall be cause for adverse action. An above average degree of discretion is required while handling residents, facility and medical information.

 

Mental/Visual/Physical Environment

Job duties can be mentally/emotionally stressful at times. Requires the ability to deal effectively with stress. Close mental concentration and attention to detail are required for most activities.  Physical activities require the ability to walk, sit, reach, extensive bending, and heavy lifting white assisting residents to walk or turn, and when transferring residents. Must have visual acuity, manual dexterity, and the ability to speak and hear.

 

Work Environment

Works in a nursing home atmosphere and an office environment. May be exposed to hazardous materials such as biohazards, disease, etc. which require strict adherence to OSHA guidelines and protocol for aseptic techniques. While traveling in the field, there could be exposure to inclement weather and a wide range of temperatures.
