State and Local Tax Advisory Director – Income / Franchise

Our State and Local Tax team is looking for a Director with a background in Income / Franchise Tax. The SALT Director – Income / Franchise will have the opportunity to work onsite / hybrid from our Tyson’s office location.

As a SALT Income / Franchise Director, you will :

Tax Consulting, Research, and Compliance

Lead the delivery of a full range of multi-state and local tax consulting services, addressing various issues in the area of income, franchise, capital stock, license, and gross receipts taxes.
Oversee primary and secondary reviews of complicated or complex State and Local tax returns.
Draft and review tax technical memorandums, client correspondence, and other various work products.
Understand and manage firm risk on tax services and proposals.
Identify opportunities to minimize clients’ multi-state tax burden through optimal filing methods, exemptions, credits / incentives, structuring alternatives, etc.
Conduct analysis and modeling of structuring alternatives.
Provide state and local audit defense assistance to clients.
Research complex state and local tax issues using state statutes, regulations, case law, and other relevant authorities / guidance.
Research state tax filing requirements that affect tax compliance.
Provide technical assistance with the tax compliance function to ensure accuracy and completeness.

Project / Task Management

Accept responsibility for and complete tasks assigned by SALT practice leaders in a timely fashion.

Make effective use of firm resources to complete a project.

Manage multiple client projects at any given time.

Alert SALT leadership in a timely fashion of any issues, constraints, challenges, and / or scheduling conflicts that may arise in completing the assigned task(s).

Engagement Management

Serve as the Engagement Director on specific client accounts, taking responsibility for pre-engagement planning, execution, and final deliverable development.

Develop a professional relationship with the client. Gain the respect and confidence of the client by consistently demonstrating supreme customer service, quality work products, and professional integrity.

Serve as the prime point-of-contact to the client. Ensure that the client is fully informed of engagement progress and logistics.

Gain the respect and confidence of the Cherry Bekaert team through effective client management, timely and accurate communication, and clear and concise team direction.

Prepare timely and accurate bills for professional services rendered.

Prepare, organize, and maintain engagement work papers and files.

Communicate periodically with clients following the completion of the engagement to ensure customer satisfaction.

New Business Development

Develop a thorough understanding of all tax, audit, and consulting services provided by the firm. Link this understanding to potential client needs.

Identify opportunities to expand the scope of current engagements through identification of current client needs and target client requirements.

Network internally. Communicate to the audit and consulting teams the types of tax services you provide to your clients to facilitate cross-selling.

Identify and pursue outside business contacts through social, charitable, and business organizations. Become an active participant in these networking channels.

Work closely with partners, managers, and staff to integrate practice development skills into a team approach to client service and new business development.

Play a key role in the future business generation and continued development of the client base within industry groups and identify future client needs and new business opportunities.

Use an established network of business relationships within industry groups to generate new sales opportunities.

Maintain strong client relations and cross-sell services within the assigned group of clients.

Staff Management and Development

Take responsibility for subordinates' activities and chargeability. Effectively delegate work to staff.

Develop team processes and systems to improve productivity and growth of the business.

Provide regular performance feedback as well as deliver timely performance evaluations.

Develop subordinates' technical and industry skills and encourage growth.

What you bring to the role :

Bachelor’s degree in accounting or related field

Advanced degree or certification required; CPA preferred

Minimum of 8 years of progressive SALT consulting and / or compliance experience in public accounting or a combination of public and corporate

Deep experience in State and Local Taxes required, including general knowledge of Sales and Use Tax, Credits & Incentives, and Property Tax

Demonstrated writing skills a must, proposal development experience desired

Demonstrated management skills

Strong tax research skills

Proven competence with MS Office and tax compliance and research software

Solid organizational skills with a demonstrated ability to multi-task

The salary range for this position is $146,395 - 328,800. Individual salaries within this range are determined by a variety of factors including but not limited to the role, function and associated responsibilities, a candidate’s work experience, education, knowledge, skills, and geographic location.
