Description : Position Summary
The Phlebotomist / Lab Assistant of the Cherry County Hospital Laboratory is responsible for efficiently and accurately collecting blood and other samples from patients. Duties include preparing the testing room with proper tools, walking patients through the process when inserting needles and retrieving samples, and labeling samples for further analysis in the lab.

Duties and Responsibilities
Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following :
Obtains blood specimens and collects nonblood specimens such as urine, sputum, and throat swabs for laboratory testing; verifies patient information and labels samples properlyExplains blood drawing and other procedures to patients and answers any questionsGathers medical testing materials, including needles, sample vials, blood storage bags and test tubesFunctions in the capacity of a phlebotomist as required, following established policies and proceduresAnswers telephones throughout the department, and transfers as appropriateAssists Lab with distributing reportsPerforms additional clerical / administrative tasks to assist the lab with day-to-day operationsMonitors and maintains supply inventories following established protocolsFollows all health and safety protocols and procedures to maintain sanitary work areas by wiping counters, centrifuges, and phones with disinfectant in order to remain in compliance with regulatory agenciesParticipates with coworkers, evaluating workflow and prioritizing responsibilities to provide effective patient careParticipates in rotation of hours / duties and overtime as requiredParticipates in continuing education when offeredAssists with orientation of new employees, providing them with consistent informationDemonstrates knowledge and understanding of patient privacy rightsMaintains confidentiality of all medical, financial or other sensitive materials and information in printed, electronic, or verbal form which may jeopardize the privacy of patients / employeesAccesses and uses the minimum necessary patient identifiable information to perform job responsibilities and duties, and only for authorized purposesEnsures the confidentiality of patients’ medical, personal, and financial records is maintainedKnowledgeable of and committed to practicing Corporate Compliance policies and proceduresComplies with Cherry County Hospital personnel policiesPerforms other duties as assigned by Administrator or supervisorSkills and Abilities Required
Excellent communication skills to deal with co-workers and general publicPossess manual dexterity and knowledge to perform venipuncturesAbility to communicate effectively in the English language in person, by phone. and in writingAbility to work under pressure due to multiple interruptions, staffing shortages, and / or instrumentation problemsMust be knowledgeable of state and federal confidentiality laws, including but not limited to HIPAA, and be familiar with and follow all policies, procedures and instructions regarding the privacy and security of protected health information applicable to the positionPhysical Demands and Working Conditions

Minimum Job Requirements
Phlebotomy certification highly preferred, or completion of on-the-job training provided by Lab Manager or StaffCPR certification preferredGood communication skills
