Position Summary
The Medical Laboratory Technician of the Cherry County Hospital Laboratory is responsible to perform laboratory testing required in waived, moderate, and high complexity testing procedures established for laboratory, and report accurate results to physicians and nurses for the patients.
Duties and Responsibilities
Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following :
Performs assays on patient samples using a variety of automated and manual testing procedures and evaluates all results for abnormal, critical, or alert valuates before releasing reports, assuring accuracy and completeness of testingPerforms and documents quality control, proficiency testing, quality assurance, preventative maintenance, and troubleshooting on all assays and instruments in the laboratory in accordance with Medical Test Site rules and CLIA regulationsFunctions in the capacity of a phlebotomist or processor as required, following established policies and proceduresResponsible for contacting the physician’s office or nursing stations with requested verbal results of STATS, critical or alert values to expedite patient careAnswers telephones throughout the department, providing results when requested or forwarding the call as requiredMaintains established department policies and procedures, objectives, safety, environmental, and infectious control standards so that the laboratory remains in compliance with accreditation agenciesMonitors and maintains supply inventories following established protocols; receives supplies and distributes them to the appropriate departmentsAssists in the care and maintenance of work area by wiping counters, centrifuges, and phones with disinfectant in order to remain in compliance with regulatory agenciesParticipates with coworkers, evaluating workflow and prioritizing responsibilities, to provide effective patient careParticipates in rotation of hours / duties and overtime as requiredParticipates in continuing education when offeredAssists in the research and development of new proceduresParticipates in writing procedures and updating procedure manualsAssists with orientation of new employees, providing them with consistent informationPerforms as temporary supervisor or lead when requiredDemonstrates knowledge and understanding of patient privacy rightsMaintains confidentiality of all medical, financial or other sensitive materials and information in printed, electronic, or verbal form which may jeopardize the privacy of patients and / or employeesAccesses and uses the minimum necessary patient identifiable information to perform job responsibilities and duties, and only for authorized purposesEnsures the confidentiality of patients’ medical, personal, and financial records is maintainedKnowledgeable of and committed to practicing Corporate Compliance policies and proceduresComplies with Cherry County Hospital personnel policiesPerforms other duties as assigned by Administrator or supervisorSkills and Abilities Required
Proficiency with laboratory applications, instrumentation, and testingPossesses manual dexterity and knowledge to perform venipunctures, process body fluid samples, and perform sample testing in all areas of the laboratoryAbility to read and interpret the accuracy of tests results from reports and computer screensAbility to visually determine test endpoint resultsAbility to communicate effectively in the English language in person, by phone, and in writingAbility to work under pressure due to multiple interruptions, staffing shortages, and / or instrumentation problemsTrained in the use of work processing and statistical programsFamiliar with CLIA ’88, Medical Test Site Rules, and OSHA regulationMust be knowledgeable of state and federal confidentiality laws, including but not limited to HIPAA, and be familiar with and follow all policies, procedures and instructions regarding the privacy and security of protected health information applicable to the positionPhysical Demands and Working Conditions
Must be able to hear, speak, and see to communicate on all levels with all hospital personnel and the general publicMust be able to stand for 95% of the day throughout an 8 to 10-hour dayAbility to move freely around work stationsMust have stamina to bend and carry weight up to 30 pounds for 30 feetMust perform maintenance with tools necessary and be able to work in small, close areasMust be mentally and physically prepared to meet all of the challenges and responsibilities of laboratory scienceReports to : Laboratory Manager, Technical Supervisor, Clinical Consultants

Associates degree in medical laboratory sciences or equivalent to certification requirements as stated in subpart M of CLIA 88 Rules and Regulations
