Position Summary
The Clinic Medical Assistant is responsible for rendering professional clinical care within the medical practice in support of and as directed by the providers. Will also have general responsibilities to assist in the day-to-day operation of this office at Cherry County Hospital and Clinic.
Duties and Responsibilities
Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
- Places the patients in the examining room ensuring they are as comfortable as possible
- Takes accurate histories and physical exam information
- Obtains vital signs, secures medical problem, and enters the information on the patient’s chart
- Assists providers with examination and treatment of patient and is accessible to them
- Assists providers in office surgeries using sterile procedure guidelines to ensure non-contamination of sterile field; sets up appropriate surgical instrument tray
- Screens telephone calls for the providers; takes accurate clinical messages within the limits of practice policy
- Educates patients on treatment regimen as dictated by providers including thorough explanation of prescribed medication usage, procedures for scheduled testing, and summary review of overall therapeutic plan
- Performs other related clinical duties as required
- Attends monthly staff meetings
- Ensures that all equipment in exam room is clean and properly set up prior to each patient encounter
- Ensures solutions are adequate
- Completes appropriate form for requests for consultations from the hospital and assures the information is forwarded to the provider on call or specialist in a timely manner
- Cleans and restocks examining rooms for the day’s use
- Ensures that reports from diagnostic tests ordered have been received and available for provider review
- Prepares all diagnostic reports for availability to providers
- Ensures they are screened and initialed prior to filing in medical record
- Takes calls from the pharmacist
- Calls in prescriptions and prescription refills accurately to pharmacy as directed by the providers and documents accurately in the medical record
- Answers clinical mail for the providers in a timely manner when required
- Assists in maintaining all clinical equipment to include sterilizing, if applicable
- Evaluates all equipment for damage and reports to the Office Manager
- Schedules outside diagnostic tests for patients and coordinates with the schedulers as needed; logs and maintains diagnostic scheduling logs
- Assures that patient appointments which are the result of triage are placed on the schedule
- Appropriately triages patients following providers’ preference/protocols for same day and/or work-in appointments
- Documents telephone calls accurately in medical record
- Maintains strict confidentiality
- Ensures the confidentiality of patients’ medical, personal, and financial records is maintained
- Knowledgeable of and committed to practicing Corporate Compliance policies and procedures
- Complies with Cherry County Hospital personnel policies
- Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor
Skills and Abilities Required
- Requires a basic theoretical medical assistant knowledge with application of knowledge and skills
- Recognizes the proper channels of communication
- Knowledge of physical organization of the hospital and clinic, as well as the clinic policies and procedures
- Understands the legal aspect of a medical assistant
- Ability to maintain complete confidentiality regarding patient care services
- Keeps abreast of new trends and developments in medical assisting

- Must be knowledgeable of state and federal confidentiality laws, including but not limited to HIPAA, and be familiar with and follow all policies, procedures and instructions regarding the privacy and security of protected health information applicable to the position
Physical Demands and Working Conditions
- Work maybe physically and emotionally demanding, involves lifting and positioning patients
- Environment requires working in close proximity with others in a clean, favorable area
- Physical demands require sitting for long periods of time, standing and bending as required. Requires regular working hours with possibility of overtime
- Dexterity is needed to operate equipment, telephone, intercom system and other tasks as required to meet patient care needs
- Repetitive use of hands, arms, and eyes could cause strain
- Must be agile, able to move carefully around patients and equipment with ease
- Job involves the potential for exposure to hazardous material such as contaminated body fluids
- Must possess the knowledge and insight to comply with universal precautions and clinics policies and procedures
