What are the responsibilities and job description for the Associate Director of Program - Expeditions position at Chesapeake Bay Outward Bound School Inc?
The Associate Director of Program (ADP) - Expeditions is responsible for the leadership, management, and development of Chesapeake Bay Outward Bound School (CBOBS) expeditions and the staff who run them. The ADP promotes a standard of excellence and culture of safety for all expeditions and program staff.
Requirements:The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:
Staffing & Staff Development
- Schedule qualified instructors for all expeditions, expedition support, and logistics support. Maintain accurate staff schedule data on the Brain.
- Collaborate closely with Day Program Coordinator to communicate schedules and respond to time off requests for all instructors through When I Work.
- Evaluate, support, and report on individual and instructional teams’ performance and development.
- In coordination with the Director of Program & Safety and HR, investigate policy violations and/or failures to meet expectations by instructors.
- Collaborate with Associate Director of Programs -Day Program to supervise and ensure performance reviews/development plans are completed for: Program Specialists, Program Coordinators, and Instructors.
Program Quality, Development, & Management
- Oversee all day-to-day operations of CBOBS expeditions, and ensure they remain true to the mission, values, and principles of CBOBS.
- Ensure all requirements and reporting responsibilities are met for grant-funded programs.
- Collaborate with the Director of Program & Safety and Educational Partnerships Team for the creation and maintenance of the expedition calendar.
- Ensure regular and as-needed maintenance of rock-climbing gear and safety equipment. Work with the logistics department to assure all expedition gear is inventoried, organized, clean, and in safe working condition.
- Manage relationships with local land managers, public agencies, and partners and maintain necessary land use permits.
- Work with Admissions Coordinators and Instructors staff to address student issues as they arise during enrollment or in the field.
- Ensure the quality of all pre- and post-course paperwork.
Safety & Risk Management
- Ensure all programs adhere to the OBUSA and CBOBS safety standards, policies, and administrative directives.
- Manage and participate in the emergency on-call system. Assume or share any assigned roles for any critical or emergency response.
- Participate in the preparation of safety reports and newsletters, including incident analysis, for program administration and the Program and Safety Committee.
Secondary Duties & Responsibilities
- Assist in the development of training and participate as a trainer.
- Assist in delivery of program-related events (i.e., School Briefings, Fundraising Events, etc.).
- Participate as a Field Instructor, Course Director, Rock Site Manager as needed.
- Conduct field visits to assure quality and safety of programming.
Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities)
- Bachelor’s degree plus 3-5 years of experience in the outdoor education/experiential learning field or a similar combination of education and experience.
- Field/instructional experience as a mentor in an outdoor experiential education program, preferably Outward Bound, is highly desired.
- Demonstrate knowledge of Outward Bound history, mission, pedagogy, and philosophy.
- Exemplary communication and presentation skills.
- A record of success working with youth from various backgrounds.
- Experience managing and/or running the following expeditions: backpack, canoe, sea kayak.
- Demonstrate successful working relationships with staff at all levels of an organization.
- Able to multi-task and meet deadlines within a team and individually.
- Detail-oriented with strong organizational and analytical skills.
- Proficient with Windows operating systems, wireless networks, selecting and installing software and drivers, data entry, Salesforce, mobile device setup and advanced functions of MS Word, Excel, and Outlook.
- Strong personal motivation, initiative, follow through, flexibility and commitment.
- Able to give and receive timely, effective verbal and written feedback.
- Maintain a Wilderness First Responder Certification.
- Must be able to complete OB driver training and clear a motor vehicle record check.
- Must be 21 years of age and be able to clear federal and state background checks.
Compensation & Benefits
Salary Range:
- $52,000 - $60,000; commensurate with experience.

- Ability to sit at a desk or computer 90% of the time or greater.
