GENERAL PURPOSE
This position performs responsible semi-skilled work in the maintenance and care of the grounds and related structures and equipment. Work is performed under regular supervision.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
· Mows grass, trims trees and shrubs, and maintains school grounds and facilities.
· Trims trees and bushes.
· Cuts down and removes trees.
· Picks up and returns lawn equipment.
· Cleans out ditches; rakes leaves.
· Cuts grass, edges sidewalks, and removes weeds from fences.
· Installs and repairs fences.
· Hauls, spreads and levels gravel.
· Makes minor repairs to sidewalks.
· Fills holes in asphalt.
· Operates mowing equipment, tractor, bush hog, front-end loader, and related grounds maintenance equipment in performance of tasks.
· Makes minor repairs to storm drains.
· Installs signs.
· Cleans school grounds; picks up trash and debris; cleans area around dumpster sites.
· Repairs playground equipment.
· Installs basketball, football, and soccer goals.
· Maintains running track, soccer, and football fields.
· Repairs restraining wire in stadiums.
· Performs other related duties as required/assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
· High school diploma or its equivalent.
· Possession of an appropriate driver's license valid in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
· Possession of or ability to acquire appropriate license(s), certificate(s), and/or endorsement(s) for position as required by the Commonwealth of Virginia and School Board.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Knowledge of the tools, materials, and equipment used in grounds maintenance.
- Knowledge of materials, equipment, tools, and techniques of the standard building trades.
- Knowledge of safety precautions applicable to the duties of the class.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to use common hand tools.
- Ability to operate machinery and equipment.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.
WORKING CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
· The work environment is both inside and outside; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, vibration, hazards, and atmospheric conditions.
· This is heavy work requiring the exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
· Work requires stooping, crouching, reaching, walking, pulling, lifting, and grasping; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for depth perception, color perception, peripheral vision, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, use of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts at or within arms length, operation of machines, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, and observing general surroundings and activities.
