SummaryThe Medical Technologist / Medical Laboratory Scientist (Patient Care) is responsible for testing the requested analyses of patient specimens using manual or automated methodologies for use in the diagnosis and treatment of varying diseases, while following established protocols and standards.Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesThese duties and responsibilities described below represent the general tasks performed on a daily basis; other tasks may be assigned.Plan, organize, and prioritize work duties to accomplish work load and accompanying dutiesComply with the established standards and practices / proceduresUse proper techniques and equipmentAssemble supplies and equipment and assure proper functioning and cleanlinessPerform tests and procedures as ordered / requisitionedFollow outlines in procedure manualsIdentify and label all specimens received and collected, then discard after tests or store for future referenceRecord, report, and post test results and findings as requiredFile, mail, and / or call in reportsPerform quality controls and quality assurance techniques per department protocols as requestedConsult with and keep the Manager informed of all activities, needs, and problems within the departmentNotify the Manager of out of control, discrepant, or unexpected results within the expected time frameCorrelate clinical data / diagnoses with test results for reasonableness and accuracyOffer / suggest alternative and / or repeat testing based on clinical data and diagnosisMonitor all test results, unknowns, controls, and standards and evaluate for accurate method / machine / sample performanceCommunicate clearly and logically with any and all persons involved in patient care to assure the highest quality of care is givenAttend required hospital-wide orientations, meetings, and in-servicesDemonstrate a commitment to flexible work scheduling when necessary to ensure patient careQualificationsTo perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Degree in Medical Technology or related fieldPreferred Education : Not applicableExperience : Prior experience is preferred, but will hire new graduatesCertificates, Licenses, RegistrationsApplicants must be certified as a Medical Technologist (ASCP) or Medical Laboratory Scientist or equivalent within 12 months of hire; specialty certifications are encouraged and preferred in addition to the MT equivalent. Must hold a current BLS certification or obtain within 3 months.
